All About Your Baby in Spanish

While we may never know the true beginning of life, we know that living a fulfilling life requires joyful experiences, especially with family. One such experience that fills our hearts with joy is awaiting the arrival of a new baby! If you’re a parent-to-be, this post about your baby in Spanish will prepare you to talk about your exciting experience in another language.

As you watch your little one grow, use this vocabulary guide to talk about their health, clothing and more! Learn various ways to say “baby” in Spanish, including its derivatives, as well as other baby-related stuff.

Is it a Boy or a Girl?

Like many nouns in Spanish, the word “baby” undergoes some changes depending on gender and number.

Are you having a little girl? Then, you’d say:

Vamos a tener una bebé.
We’re going to have a baby girl.

Whereas if you’re expecting a little boy, you’d say:

Estamos esperando un bebé.
We’re expecting a baby boy.

In Spanish, plenty of synonyms exist to refer to babies, and most are full of loving affection. Some of the most popular words are in the following table:

Spanish Diminutives for Cuteness

There’s no denying that babies are cute! When you boast about your baby in Spanish, you’ll want to use diminutives, which are suffixes that denote to a smaller size and are often used to express love or affection.

 For example, you can call your baby baby un bebecito or your baby girl una bebecita.

Example Sentences

Mira este vestido que compré para mi bebecita.
Look at this dress I bought for my little baby.

El bebecito se ve muy tierno bebiendo su biberón.
The baby looks very cute drinking her bottle.

Tus hijitas se ven muy hermosas.
Your little girls look very beautiful.

Decorating Baby’s Room

When awaiting the arrival of a new family member, we think and plan what the room will be like, and how to decorate it. And we make plans for what to place in the room to make it look beautiful—things like la cuna (the crib), los biberones (the bottles), la estantería (the shelf) to place los peluches (the plush toys), and more.

How to Talk About Feeding Your Baby in Spanish

There are a variety of foods that we can give to babies throughout their growth, especially in the first year, since they need a high amount of los nutrientes (the nutrients) such as las proteínas (proteins), las grasas (fats), las vitaminas (vitamins) and los minerales (minerals). 

Let’s take a look at what babies eat for the first year of their lives and learn Spanish vocabulary along the way!

Mi bebé tomará leche de fórmula durante los primeros meses.
My baby will drink formula for the first few months.

Nuestro bebé se verá muy tierno comiendo papilla.
Our baby will look very cute eating the porridge.

La madre alimentará a su hijo con leche materna.
The mother will feed her child with breast milk.
