7 Questions to Ask Before Choosing an Online Spanish Program for Credit

Not all online Spanish programs are created equal. If you’re like me, the second you type “online Spanish classes for credit” into Google, you’re met with a dozen programs, each claiming to be flexible, affordable, and college-prep worthy. But here’s the thing: when your child is working toward actual high school credit, especially in middle school, you can’t afford to guess.

You need to know exactly what to ask before clicking “enroll.” Because some programs may teach Spanish, but not all will meet your district’s or homeschool umbrella’s requirements for credit.

Let’s walk through seven smart, mom-to-mom questions to ask before choosing the right program for your child.

1. Does the program award a transcript or completion certificate?

This one is non-negotiable. If you want your child to receive official credit, the school or homeschool association evaluating the course will expect documentation. That means a detailed transcript, certificate of completion, or, at the very least, a formal grade report.

Look for programs that include:

  • Student name
  • Course title (e.g., Spanish 1A, Spanish 1B)
  • Final grade
  • Total instructional hours

For example, at Homeschool Spanish Academy (HSA), students receive all of the above, making it easy to submit to your district or umbrella school.

2. Is the curriculum aligned with high school foreign language standards?

Some programs are “Spanish-themed”—lots of songs and vocabulary—but fall short of what’s required for high school credit. A credit-worthy curriculum should include:

  • Grammar instruction
  • Verb conjugations
  • Reading and listening comprehension
  • Writing and conversation practice
  • Formal assessments

We believe a solid beginner program should help students reach Novice High to Intermediate Low proficiency after Spanish 1. That’s more than flashcards and games; it requires structured progression.

3. How many instructional hours are included?

Most US schools define one high school credit as 120–150 hours of coursework. So if a program offers a quick 8-week course or once-a-week lessons, it likely won’t meet that threshold unless supplemented.

Ask:

  • How long is each class?
  • How many weeks is the course?
  • Is homework included in that hour count?

A full-credit course should span at least 30 weeks (or two 15-week semesters, like Spanish 1A and 1B), with regular engagement and review.

4. Are the teachers qualified and consistent?

Your child’s Spanish teacher shouldn’t just speak Spanish; they should know how to teach it. Ideally, your teacher is a native speaker with experience teaching students at your child’s level.

Also, ask if your child will work with the same teacher consistently. Building trust and routine helps middle schoolers thrive, especially if this is their first experience with language learning.

5. Does the program offer placement support or level testing?

What if your child has some Spanish experience from apps or school, but you’re not sure where they belong? A good program should offer a placement test or consultation before enrollment so your child doesn’t get bored, frustrated, or repeat material they already know.

If your student is starting fresh, the program should begin with Spanish 1A, an actual beginner-level course that gently introduces grammar, vocabulary, and conversation.

6. Is the program flexible enough for your schedule, but still structured?

One reason many parents choose online learning is the flexibility. But “go at your own pace” shouldn’t mean “no accountability.”

Look for a program that lets you:

  • Set your own class times
  • Track weekly progress
  • Communicate with instructors
  • Adjust pace without losing structure

At HSA, for example, you can schedule classes around your family calendar but still follow a clear path to Spanish 1A and 1B credit.

7. Can I talk to someone before signing up?

You can learn a lot about a program from how it treats parents before they enroll. Can you speak to an advisor? Ask questions? Preview the curriculum?

If the answer is no, that’s a red flag.

You deserve a team that walks you through the process and helps you feel confident about the decision.

In fact, at Homeschool Spanish Academy, you can book a free class to meet a native-speaking teacher and preview how the program works. No pressure, no payment needed.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a Spanish program that offers high school credit is a big decisión, especially for a middle school beginner. But asking the right questions now can save time, money, and stress later.

You want more than just vocabulary memorization. You want structured lessons, real progress, and a program that actually counts.

Visit our Spanish program for kids to explore the curriculum, meet our teachers, and see how our courses stack up for credit. Because when it comes to your child’s education, you deserve to feel 100% confident in your choice.

“It’s great being able to interact with native speaking people and having a conversation with them not just doing all the work on paper. It’s also an amazing opportunity to speak with native Spanish-speaking people without having to travel to a native Spanish-speaking country.”

- Abby

“Getting to know wonderful teachers who care about me and my growth in language and education. Evelyn Gomez and Erick Cacao are two of the most extraordinary people I have ever met, and talking with them in Spanish at the beginning of classes is always so fulfilling and greatly contributes to my happiness, joy, and wellbeing.”

- Karie Ann, Parent of 3

“I love that my children have the opportunity to speak with a live person. They get to practice Spanish in a 1-1 setting while improve their speaking, writing and reading skills during their lessons. HSA is a great way to learn Spanish for all ages! My children are 6, 9 and 11. My oldest two (9 and 11) have been taking classes with HSA for almost 2 years now. They love seeing their teacher each week. They understand the importance of learning several languages. I’ve seen them grow and learn with HSA. I’m excited to see how they will improve the more classes they take. I highly recommend them. You can’t bet learning and speaking with a live teacher. I’ve tried other programs. It’s just not as motivating.”
