Kings, Queens, and Royalty for Spanish Learners

The royal lifestyle is a compelling subject, and some of the most memorable kings and queens come from the birthplace of the Spanish language!

Kings and queens for kids are often important characters in movies, storybooks, fairy tales, and more. Children enjoy learning about them and identify their role at a young age. 

Los reyes y las reinas (kings and queens) are an important part of history. Kings and queens are responsible for declaring wars, conquering nations, and creating controversies.

Los reyes y las reinas are in charge of kingdoms. They acquire this right to govern by birth. 

Spanish example

The Monarchy

La monarquía (monarchy) is a political system where a monarca (monarch) is the head of state of a nation. The monarch is another name for a king or queen. The power of la monarquía passes from generation to generation.

The monarchy was the chosen form of rule for European countries between the 16th and 18th centuries. During this time, the power of a king or queen was absolute. Today, monarchies that prevail share power with prime ministers and presidents. Two examples are el Reino de España (the Kingdom of Spain) and the United Kingdom. 

Kings and Queens for Kids Words and Phrases

El rey (king) and la reina (queen) of ancient times lived in majestic residences and followed strict royal protocols. Kings and queens of those times are often portrayed with coronas (crowns), joyas (jewels), un cetro (scepter), and lavish clothing. 

They were elegantes (elegant), poderosos (powerful), and ricos (wealthy). Kings and queens had access to superior education and unique privileges.

Kings and queens of today still follow royal rules and have certain obligations. Let’s examine a Spanish vocabulary list with essential concepts related to kings and queens for kids.

The royal court is made of advisors and extended royal family.

A royal subject is a person under authority of the royal family.

Important Kings and Queens of History

History has given us memorable kings and queens. Many stand out for courage and others stand out for being authoritarian. Let’s revisit a few of these memorable characters. 

King George III

El Rey Jorge III ruled England for 59 years. He was only 22 when he took the throne.

King Henry VIII

El Rey Henry VIII was known for shaping the course of England. He separated from the Catholic church and married six times.

King Louis XIV

El Rey Luis XIV ruled France for 72 years. He became ruler when he was only 4 years old. Some historians claim he only took a bath three times in his whole life. 

Catherine the Great of Russia

Caterina la Grande de Rusia was a German princess who rose to become the absolute ruler of Russia. 

Queen Victoria of England

La Reina Victoria is known as the “grandmother of Europe.” She earned the nickname because her 9 children married into existing European monarchies. 

Queen Elizabeth II

La Reina Isabel is the absolute ruler of the countries that are part of the British Commonwealth. She is 95 years old and has been in power for almost 70 years.

5 Kings and Queens Activities for your Spanish Classroom

1. King or Queen for a Day (Rey o reina por un día)

This classroom activity teaches your students the responsibilities and duties of a king or queen. The goal of the activity is to choose a student to be el rey or la reina. Give the chosen students a cardboard crown. 

The game is similar to “Simon Says,” except the students follow the commands of the chosen monarchs as a way of supporting classroom activities. The king and queen of the class should only give friendly commands in Spanish. 

Use this activity to encourage sentence building and practice of Spanish verbs. If you have a large class, name princesas, principes, caballeros, and members of the royal court.

2. Word Match
