Spanish Vowels Printables and Activities (Free Spanish Lessons for Kids)

Spanish vowels are the building blocks of any word, they need far more attention than any other letter in the alphabet.

All 5 Spanish vowels are a key part of the alphabet and knowing how to pronounce and use them properly is basic for Spanish learners of all ages. When it comes to kids, their minds are like sponges and they’re able to retain plenty of information when given properly.

First, you should teach your kids the differences between Spanish vowels vs English vowels. Being able to tell them apart can support them in becoming confident and fluent Spanish-speakers that avoid making common mistakes. Young Spanish learners need to learn the vowel sounds early and should practice them often focusing on the sound, not the letter itself.

Vowel sounds are important for pronunciation first and for reading later. Allowing kids to discover how to use and pronunciate words in Spanish that contain vowels with accents, their phonetics, and consonants can be done using amusing and engaging activities ideal for the classroom or home.

Teaching Spanish vowels to kids is fun and essential for cultivating reading comprehension, vocabulary, and pronunciation. In this blog post I provide a list of practical, entertaining, and highly educational activities you can use as a kid’s guide to Spanish vowels. Let ‘s begin!

Songs About Spanish Vowels

Vowel songs are perfect for introducing kids to the Spanish vowels. They’re highly effective because they’re short and available for you to use during classroom down time or as a pick-me-up activity between lessons.

Songs are great for singing along, dancing, and memorizing through catchy tunes. Songs also teach kids the sounds of the vowels and how to pronounce them properly. Here’s a list of songs you can use:

Ronda de las vocales

Sing la ronda de los vocales (the round of vowels) in a merry go round where kids become familiarized with the pronunciation of the vowels. The lyrics focus on each vowel separately and include different words with vowels. By the end of the tune, your kids will be dancing and will know more vocabulary using  each one of the Spanish vowels.

Las Vocales by Atiempo Preescolar

This song and video is effective for teaching Spanish vowels because it’s short and it’s also set in a classroom with students singing along. It uses all 5 Spanish vowels: A, E, I, O, U and the verb aprender (learn). It also links the vowels to familiar vocabulary and words.

La Canción de las Vocales de Mono Sílabo

This song teaches the Spanish vowels by using words that start with each vowel along with two quirky puppets. It’s definitely more lengthy than other songs but it includes a wide list of vocabulary that covers objects, animals, colors, and more;  which makes it ideal for older Elementary students that can memorize long lists of words.

Mix and Match

Play a game of mix and match where you challenge your kids to match the vowel to the word in Spanish that begins with such a vowel. Our template includes different words and the vowels for your kids to cut out, copy, and paste. It’s also categorized into nouns, verbs, and adverbs, making it ideal for more advanced Spanish learners.

La Risa de las Vocales (The laughter of vowels)

La risa de las vocales is a free app you can use to get preschoolers or elementary students familiarized with Spanish vowels and the rest of the alphabet. Through interactive games and songs, the app facilitates kids ability to recognize the letters and how they sound. It’s great for covering the sounds of nasal vowels and how to say them properly.

Some of the activities even allow your children to learn how to type on your phone words with Spanish vowels.  Since you’ll have it on your phone, it’s accessible to use anywhere at any time. The app is designed to stimulate and increase your child’s cognitive process and relies on visual and audio learning.

Download it for Android or IOS.

Frasco de Vocales (Vowel Jar)

For this activity you’ll need 5 empty jars which will represent each one of the Spanish vowels. Print out our template of cut-outs that begin with vowels, the goal is to have the students classify each of the pictures in the appropriate vowel jar. Our template also has a worksheet where students can practice writing the classified words to go over spelling and reading comprehension.

Word Puzzle

Use our word puzzle template as a resource for teaching Spanish vowels to students who possess an advanced understanding of Spanish reading and writing. The worksheet has 15 different puzzles to solve with an illustrated clue and words without vowels.

The words on this puzzle combine different vowels at the beginning, in the middle, or with accents. It also covers the concept of diphtongues where strong vowels combined with other vowels form one syllable. This activity requires plenty of concentration and will prove to be an entertaining challenge for those Middle School and High School Spanish learners.

Sopa de Letras (Word Soup)

Sopa de letras is an excellent resource you can use to teach all sorts of vocabulary and spelling to advanced Spanish learners. Our template has a word soup for each of the 5 vowels that allow your kids to get to know words that start with vowels but are diverse. The more they’re able to identify these and practice how they’re pronounced or spelled, the easier it’ll be for them to use them naturally in conversation.

Spanish Vowels At-Home Scavenger Hunt

Design your own scavenger hunt or print out our template that covers a variety of objects you can find lying around the house. As students locate the items on the chart, it’s important they say the word out loud, emphasizing the sounds of the vowels without making mistakes.

Throw in some prizes into the mix and make it even more exciting.

Once you’re done with the scavenger hunt, you can also play a game of veo,veo ¿que ves? (I spy). Use the same list and ask the questions following this format:

Player 1: Veo, Veo (I spy with my little eye)

Player 2: ¿Qué ves? (What do you see?)

Player 1: Veo algo que empieza con la letra a/e/i/o/u… (I spy something that begins with the letter a/e/i/o/u…)
