The Life and Work of José Martí

José Martí was born in La Habana, Cuba on January 28th, 1953.

His family was of Spanish origins, which took them to relocate to Valencia, Spain for two years. José Martí spent his childhood attending school and was interested in the arts.

In 1867, he enrolled in a professional arts academy and started taking drawing classes. When La guerra de los diez años (The War of Ten Years) began in Cuba, José Martí joined the nationalist movement.

He was briefly arrested in 1869 and sentenced to six years in prison. He was released thanks to his family’s countless efforts and a pardon that led him to exile.

Once José Martí relocated again to Spain, he publicly denounced in the Madrid press the political injustices of Cuba. He attended the university and completed a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and letters.

After spending time traveling around Europe and Mexico, he was able to return to Cuba in 1878. In 1879 he was once again exiled and relocated to Spain yet again because of accusations of conspiracy.

José Martí moved to New York and continued to pursue his political aspirations of a free Cuba. He wrote for the press and earned a respectable reputation among Latin American governments.

José Martí supported the revolutionary political movement which he presided and founded. He was a leader of Cuban liberation who died in May 1865 in the middle of a battle.

People remember him as a valuable journalist, professor, poet, art critic, translator, and inspiring figure.
