Life and Work of Daniel Alarcon
Daniel Alarcon was born in Lima, Peru in 1977. Along with his family, he left Peru at the age of three. His family made a life for him in California and Alabama.
The author spent his childhood surrounded by books thanks to his parents’ affinity towards reading. He started writing at a young age and was eager to embark on any literary masterpiece he encountered.
In spite of the distance, Daniel Alarcon grew up learning about his Peruvian heritage and hearing stories from his parents that highlighted what life in Peru was like. This allowed Daniel to build strong ties and roots to his homeland.
He studied Anthropology in Columbia University and also pursued studies in Ghana. Once he returned to the United States, he became a professor in New York. He often identifies himself as both a New Yorker and Peruvian.
Daniel Alarcon writes fiction and creates portraits of modern society. His novels focus on scenarios where people’s lives are heavily affected by Latin American politics. The author mostly writes in English and translates his work into Spanish.
Daniel Alarcon is considered among the top young authors in Peru. He is a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship. His work has been published in well known media outlets like The New Yorker and Harper’s Bazaar. He’s been called one of the best young American novelists of his time.
