This hilly, historical area is incredibly significant to Chile’s past, present, and future.

History

Originally inhabited by Chango Indians, Valparaiso later came under the control of the Spanish conquistadors in the 1500s. In fact, it is believed that conquistador Juan de Saavedra founded and even named the city.

Chile wouldn’t gain independence from Spain until the early 1800s, but that didn’t stop Valparaiso from playing a key global role. Valparaiso quickly became one of the area’s most important places due to its strategic position near the water. This city was the country’s first port and even served as a base for the Spanish Royal Navy’s Pacific Squadron.
