Mini Scientists en Español: Easy Experiments That Teach Spanish Words

If your preschooler loves mixing, pouring, and making a bubbly mess, you’re in for a treat. Science experiments aren’t just exciting; they’re one of the most natural ways for kids to learn language. When children connect words to actions—like “mezclar” (to mix) or “burbuja” (bubble)—Spanish becomes meaningful and unforgettable.

According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), preschoolers learn best through hands-on experiences that engage all their senses. That’s why a little science magic can go a long way. When your child sees colors fizz, eggs float, or water change hues, their brain forms powerful language associations that help words stick.

Today, we’ll combine three simple, safe science experiments with essential Spanish vocabulary. These can all be done at home with everyday items, and each includes a short list of Spanish words to say together as you explore.

1. The Fizzing Volcano: El volcán que hace burbujas

Few things capture a child’s imagination like a homemade volcano. It’s the perfect way to introduce chemistry, reactions, and a few fiery Spanish words!

What you’ll need:

  • Baking soda (bicarbonato de sodio)
  • Vinegar (vinagre)
  • Dish soap (jabón líquido)
  • Food coloring (colorante)
  • A cup or small bottle (una taza o una botella)

Steps:

  1. Place the bottle on a tray.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of bicarbonato de sodio and a squirt of jabón líquido.
  3. Mix in a few drops of colorante.
  4. Pour in the vinagre and watch your volcano hacer burbujas (make bubbles)!

Spanish words to repeat:

  • El volcán – the volcano
  • Explosión – explosion
  • Burbuja – bubble
  • Rojo / naranja / amarillo – red / orange / yellow

Why it works:
Your child isn’t just seeing a reaction; they connect action and color with language. Repeating words as the volcano “erupts” keeps learning joyful and spontaneous.

2. The Floating Egg: El huevo que flota

This simple experiment turns breakfast into a science lab! It teaches buoyancy and comparison words like “heavy” and “light.”

What you’ll need:

  • Two clear glasses (dos vasos)
  • Water (agua)
  • Salt (sal)
  • An egg (un huevo)

Steps:

  1. Fill both glasses halfway with agua.
  2. Add 3 tablespoons of sal to one glass and stir until it dissolves.
  3. Gently place el huevo in each glass. Watch it sink in plain water and float in saltwater!

Spanish words to repeat:

  • Flotar – to float
  • Hundir – to sink
  • Sal – salt
  • Agua – water
  • Pesado / ligero – heavy / light

Why it works:
As your child compares what they see—“El huevo flota aquí”—they naturally use descriptive language. You’re showing them that science and Spanish both answer the same big question: Why?

3. Rainbow Water: El agua de arcoíris

When your child mixes colors, they’re learning about light and transformation. This activity also introduces sensory vocabulary—words that describe what they see and feel.

What you’ll need:

  • Three cups of water (tres vasos de agua)
  • Food coloring (colorante de comida)
  • A spoon (una cuchara)

Steps:

  1. Fill each glass with agua.
  2. Add red, blue, and yellow colorante—one per glass.
  3. Encourage your child to mix colors using una cuchara and see what new colors appear.

Spanish words to repeat:

  • Colores primarios – primary colors
  • Arcoíris – rainbow
  • Mezclar – to mix
  • Rojo, azul, amarillo, verde, morado – red, blue, yellow, green, purple

Why it works:
Color play activates both hemispheres of the brain. When your child names verde or morado while mixing, they’re building vocabulary through direct experience, a method proven to increase retention in young learners.

Bringing It All Together

Science and Spanish are a perfect pair: both spark curiosity and discovery. When children hear and use Spanish during experiments, their vocabulary becomes tied to joy and exploration, not memorization. Your child isn’t just repeating words; they’re living them through action, sound, and sight.

To keep the learning going, try labeling your experiment materials in Spanish or making a “science corner” at home where your pequeño científico (little scientist) can keep exploring. Final Thoughts

When you combine bubbling volcanoes, floating eggs, and rainbow water, you’re not just making memories, you’re helping your child see Spanish as a living, breathing part of their world. Through hands-on play, even the simplest words come to life.

Next time your little one shouts “¡Mira, mamá!” as the volcano explodes, you’ll know: science just made Spanish unforgettable.

“It’s great being able to interact with native speaking people and having a conversation with them not just doing all the work on paper. It’s also an amazing opportunity to speak with native Spanish-speaking people without having to travel to a native Spanish-speaking country.”

“I love that my children have the opportunity to speak with a live person. They get to practice Spanish in a 1-1 setting while improve their speaking, writing and reading skills during their lessons. HSA is a great way to learn Spanish for all ages! My children are 6, 9 and 11. My oldest two (9 and 11) have been taking classes with HSA for almost 2 years now. They love seeing their teacher each week. They understand the importance of learning several languages. I’ve seen them grow and learn with HSA. I’m excited to see how they will improve the more classes they take. I highly recommend them. You can’t bet learning and speaking with a live teacher. I’ve tried other programs. It’s just not as motivating.”
