Basic Body Parts in Spanish

The human body is amazing! When children learn how to label specific body parts in Spanish, they can have more meaningful conversations about their bodies.

The body is divided into three major sections:

  • head – la cabeza
  • trunk or torso – el tronco, el torso
  • extremities – las extremidades

Head (La cabeza)

La cabeza (the head) consists of el craneo (skull) and la cara (face).

In the head are the sense organs: eyes, nose, skin, tongue, and ears (Spanish vocabulary is in the table below).

Inside the skull is el cerebro (brain), el cerebelo (cerebellum) and el bulbo raquideo (medulla oblongata) which control your movements, biological needs, and emotions.

The torso contains el tórax (the thorax), formed by the spine, breastbone, and ribs. La caja torácica (rib cage) protects the heart and lungs.

The torso is also home to the stomach and intestines, glands, kidneys, bladder and the reproductive system.

Learning Spanish Vocabulary Through Questions

Asking questions is a fundamental part of a child’s development.

Through asking questions, our kids show interest in the world around them. But kids need guidance when learning how to ask questions, especially in Spanish.

To teach your children how to ask questions in Spanish, keep in mind the most common interrogative pronouns:

  • what? – ¿qué?
  • where? – ¿dónde?
  • who? – ¿quiénes?
  • when? – ¿cuándo?
  • how? – ¿cómo?
  • why – ¿por qué?
  • which one? – ¿cuál?

Check our Guide to Use Question Words in Spanish for a full explanation on the use of interrogative pronouns and how to use them to teach your kids.

Example Questions and Answers in Spanish

¿Dónde está tu nariz?
¡Aquí!

Where is your nose?
Here!

¿Dónde está tu codo?
¡Aquí!

Where is your elbow?
Here!

¿Dónde están tus ojos?
¡Aquí!

Where are your eyes?
Here!

Use these questions to teach your children to show you the body part you asked them for:

¿Cuál es tu mano derecha?
¡Esta!

Which one is your right hand?
This one!

¿Cuál es tu pie izquierdo?
¡Este!

Which one is your left foot?
This one!

¿Cuál es tu dedo pulgar?
¡Este es!

Which one is your thumb?
This one is!

Teach them the following questions to your kids and teach them how to answer with adjectives in Spanish:

¿Cómo es tu nariz?
Muy pequeña.

How is your nose?
It is really small.

¿De qué color es tu cabello?
negro/rubio/café

What color is your hair?

Learn Spanish Through Interesting Topics

Learning about the body parts in Spanish and English is fundamental for the development and education of our children. Teach them through memorable topics like science experiments or the wonders of the world to make your lessons stick.

Spanish is a primary subject that most students begin studying when in elementary school. When they reach high school, they’ll find that Spanish is available as both an Advanced Placement (AP) test, as well as an SAT II subject test. While it’s certainly possible to memorize the exam material and do well, it’s infinitely easier when they enter the course with a strong knowledge of the language. Learning to speak Spanish at an early age can make these courses less stressful, more enjoyable, and ultimately, more rewarding.
