Struggling With Homeschooling
Homeschooling is an amazing experience, but it can also be a bit challenging. Especially, if you didn’t plan it carefully before deciding to start on this journey with your child.
Some of the most common challenges that homeschooling families face are:
- the risk of isolation
- the weight of carrying unrealistic expectations, and
- anxiety and depression.
In this article, homeschooling parents share their regrets about homeschooling, which can help you to understand that you’re not alone in this! Some of the more common regrets that parents have are not doing more field trips, pushing their kids too hard, and trying to do too much.
My point is that if you’re struggling with homeschooling, you’re in good company. Many families have been there and they’ve dealt with that challenge successfully. And, you will too!
8 Things to Know if You’re Struggling With Homeschooling
Struggles and regrets aside, let’s get some strong motivation going with this list of things to know if you’re struggling with homeschooling!
1. You’re Doing Better Than You Think
If you’re reading this, it’s because you care! Because you want the best for your child’s education, which keeps you looking for solutions to their homeschooling challenges.
The struggles and challenges may be getting to you, allowing a sense of doubt to creep in about whether or not you’re actually up to the task of giving your child the best homeschool education possible—but forget about all that.
No one on this planet cares more about your child than you.
It’s normal to struggle with homeschooling. It’s not an easy task to dedicate full time to your child’s education and keep up with everything else too. But if you’re putting in the time and constantly seeking solutions to your challenges, then you’re doing much better than you’re giving yourself credit for.
Give yourself a pat on the back!
2. You’re Not Alone
Trust me, I know what I’m talking about. Every homeschooling parent struggles from time to time, it comes with the job. They also feel that it’s getting out of control and doubt themselves. All you have to do is to do a quick search on the internet, and you’ll see that struggling with homeschooling is more common than you think.
Next time you start feeling down or that all this homeschooling thing may be too much for you, remember that you aren’t the first one feeling that way and that you’re not alone. For some reason, knowing that others share the same burden as us makes it easier to carry it.
3. Reduce Stress
This is one of the best things you can do when struggling with homeschooling. Sometimes, things at home can get too messy, noisy, and out of control. Take a step back and think about why things are working like that. It usually has to do with bad planning and an overall lack of organization. So, focus on that.
In order to reduce the stress at home, you can try to outline a schedule for every day, divide your day into blocks, or just be more flexible with your day routine. Re-designing your working routine at home can go a long way in helping you to reduce the stress coming from your family’s homeschooling efforts.

4. Take It One Day at a Time
One of the main sources of trouble for homeschooling parents is that they want to give their children all the best, sometimes at the same time. It’s okay to want your child to have the best education they can possibly have, but you need to be respectful of your child’s needs and style of learning.
Take it one day at a time and try to look at the big picture. If you’re doing the right things and taking the proper steps, then everything will take care of itself. Pushing harder and harder will not actually make your child learn faster or develop more skills in less time, so don’t wear yourself out thinking that you need to “do it all” or “make it happen immediately.”
5. Change Up Your Schedule
Changing your schedule can solve many of the problems you’re facing with your homeschooling experience. Have you ever thought about trying night schooling? Or what about including more field trips into your weekly or monthly schedule?
Changing up your schedule a little bit can do wonders to solve most of the challenges you’re facing right now. It will not only be a refreshing change, but also will allow you to see things from a different perspective and rethink the way you’re approaching the homeschool experience in your family.
6. Seek Outside Support
Sometimes, when things start to get out of control, the best thing to do is to ask for help and seek support. Talk to your family, to other homeschooling parents, and it’s okay to talk about this even with professionals.
You can also join local homeschool co-ops, discuss your struggles on Facebook homeschool groups, or contact a homeschool specialist. Sometimes, all you need is a fresh perspective and someone who can point you in the right direction.

7. Recalibrate Your Expectations
It’s been said that frustration comes from the gap between expectations and reality. Sometimes, you can’t change reality, but you can recalibrate your expectations. Try to not put too much pressure on your child, give them time to learn at their own pace, and inspire them to develop in their own way.
Adjusting your expectations about your child’s development and your own performance as a homeschool parent can alleviate much of the pressure you’re feeling right now.
8. Keep Calm and Carry On
Remember that iconic poster that was first used by the British government during World War II to ask the population to avoid panicking and keep going? Well, what you need right now is that same attitude.
- But let’s rephrase it a bit: keep calm and structure on.
This phrase can inspire you to reinforce your homeschool structure by making relevant adjustments as you trust your instincts. That fact is, you know what’s better for your family and you know how to do homeschooling. Just keep going and everything will be alright.
You Can Stop Struggling With Homeschooling
Struggling is normal and overcoming the challenges that homeschooling presents it’s part of the daily job of a homeschool parent.
I hope some of these tips work for you to help you to overcome your homeschooling struggles. Sometimes all you need is to add some tweaks here and there for things to start running smoothly once again!
