What to Look for in a Homeschool Program for Kindergarten
When looking for a homeschooling kindergarten curriculum there are a few things that you have to keep in mind. First, you need to inquire about your state’s homeschooling requirements, particularly if it requires standardized testing for kindergarten homeschool students.
Second, you have to differentiate between complete kindergarten curriculums and curriculums by subject. The typical subjects for kindergarten homeschoolers are language arts (reading and writing) math, science, art, foreign language, and physical education. Some Christian programs also include Bible studies.
Finally, there are a few other important features that you need to look for, including:
- If the material is fun and engaging for kids of this age.
- If it includes reporting tools to keep track of your child’s progress.
- If it focuses on reading and math.
- If it develops and reinforces skills.
Top 5 Homeschooling Kindergarten Curriculums
In the following lines I’ve compiled a list of the best five complete kindergarten curriculums and one bonus subject curriculum, with clear explanations of the reasons I considered to be included in this Top 5.
1. ABC Mouse
ABC Mouse is a multiple-award winning online kindergarten program which provides lessons, books, puzzles, games, and activities that are fun, but more than anything promote learning and the development of skills in your child.
This nationally-recognized curriculum works with most operating systems including Windows, Android, Mac, iOS, and Amazon, and its content “align with best practices of early education.”
The main reasons for choosing ABC Mouse are that it’s a renowned complete curriculum that focuses mostly in developing reading and math skills, but also includes art, music, and social studies and science curriculums.
Another interesting feature that caught my attention is that you can hae a free 30-day trial and see by yourself if this is the right homeschooling kindergarten curriculum for your child.
You can find ABC Mouse here.
The Calvert Homeschool Kindergarten Complete Set includes a language arts curriculum kit, a math curriculum kit, and a starter kit with exclusive homeschool materials for kindergarten.
I like the Calvert approach because they focus on what they do well, which is language arts and math, and deliver high quality 160-lesson programs in each subject. I also appreciate that the lessons are workbook-based but include helpful lesson plans in the teacher’s guide.
The Calvert curriculum provides no tests, but offers the possibility of doing oral evaluation after each 40-lesson block. Also, if you’re looking for a complete kindergarten program that includes all the subjects and online lessons, then Calvert isn’t the right option for you.

Timberdoodle is another award winning homeschooling curriculum kit that you can fully customize according to your needs and what you want your child to learn. It’s designed to build independent learning skills in language arts, math, history, science, and art.
I like that Timberdoodle offers a hands-on STEM approach and lots of materials and resources. It’s also very interesting that you can get a basic, complete, or elite version of the same curriculum, and that you can even choose between “faith-based” and “non-religious” options.
It’s one of the few kindergarten curriculum that focuses on developing thinking skills and emotional intelligence, and depending on the version you choose it includes interesting resources such as Kids World Map Puzzle 100, Kumon Thinking Skills, or Show Me Science: Slime, Crystals & More.

4. Five in a Row
“Before Five in a Row” and “More Before Five in a Row” are bestseller preschool and kindergarten story-based curriculums that provide lessons developing six early literacy skills.
These programmes focus on building the foundations for reading and writing, applied math, science, social studies, and art.
I like the way their lessons are designed about a story, and the supporting materials they provide, such as animal classification cards, story disks, and a storybook map. However, I don’t like that they don’t offer a non-religious version of their kits.
Find here more information about Five in a Row preschool and kindergarten curriculums.
5. Time for Learning
Time for Learning is a very complete program based in developing writing, reading, math, and science skills.
The language arts curriculum comes with over 350 activities, while the math program includes more than 200 learning experiences guided by animated characters.
I like that it’s an online curriculum with automated grading and reporting, and that each activity includes a detailed lesson plan. It’s also interesting that you can start, stop, or pause membership at any time, and that if you like the program, you can continue with it up to 12th grade.

Bonus 6. Homeschool Spanish Academy Preschool Spanish Program
One of the subjects that none of the previous options of homeschooling kindergarten curriculum covered is foreign languages. For that reason, I’ve decided to include the Preschool Spanish Program offered by Homeschool Spanish Academy (HSA).
Never is too early to start learning a second language and actually, research shows that the earlier the better. What’s more, Spanish is both the second most spoken language in the world and the easiest language to learn for English speakers.
That said, HSA’s preschool program focuses on getting your child to learn the sounds and words of Spanish at an early age. This means that the lessons have been designed for children that may or may not know how to read yet, including more images than texts.
I like this program because it offers a lot of flexibility in terms of scheduling and even in that you can have individual one-to-one lessons or pair two of your children together and let them learn Spanish together.
