What to Avoid with Online Spanish Classes in Guatemala
Before you’re able to pick the best fit, you want to know exactly what to avoid. As you likely know, not all online Spanish classes are created equal. Here are some red flags to look for during your search:
1. Avoid sites with a low-quality curriculum.
Lessons that are overly basic, too repetitive, or confusing to follow are low quality. Keep your eye out for an unbalanced focus on the 4 pillars of language learning: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. For example, a curriculum with little to no listening and speaking practice is a poor choice for Spanish learners at every level.
Pre-recorded online courses can provide tools for you to learn sentence structure, vocabulary, and pronunciation. However, a lack of listening and speaking translates to an inability to understand spoken Spanish or hold a conversation.
2. Avoid classes that are not tailored to your level.
As you search for online Spanish classes in Guatemala, you’ll notice that some schools offer placement tests while others are designed for a certain level. It’s unnecessary for a teacher to have to guess your language level when standardized placement tests exist (for example, the CEFR test) that determine your Spanish level. Ensure that the course has the level you need before you sign up.
3. Avoid inexperienced, disorganized teachers.
Tons of superb online instructors offer Spanish lessons online—but so do some flat-out bad ones. By enrolling with a reputable online Spanish school, you can rest assured that the school has vetted and perhaps even trained the teacher. Confirm that the teacher you’ll be learning from is reliable, professional, and native Spanish-speaking.
4. Avoid programs without quality assurance.
On a technical note, while some schools offer classes that are more informal than others, you do need them to offer high-quality audio and video for the classes to be effective.

4 Characteristics of Homeschool Spanish Academy’s Curriculum

In all classes, one of our main goals is to ensure that your students actually start speaking Spanish from day one. Read about what it’s like to take a class with HSA. Check out the four guidelines we use in creating our effective and enjoyable curriculum!
1. It Doesn’t Prioritize Memorization
At Homeschool Spanish Academy, we have thoughtfully developed curricula that our native-speaking teachers use in each class—and it does not emphasize rote memorization. The curriculum uses images to relate each new vocabulary word and phrase to a real-life situation. Many of our teachers also use physical objects in class, as well. This creates a direct relationship between the Spanish word and the object.
2. It Builds Upon Levels of Fluency
All HSA teachers are native Spanish speakers from Guatemala, and they make conversation a priority in every class. For students who read and write, the HSA curricula combines auditory comprehension through speaking with the teacher with written practice. The end result is that you develop skills in all areas of language learning—reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
3. It Boosts Memory through Regular Review
The HSA curricula includes the vocabulary you’ve learned in your online classes to help you remember and use the new words and phrases. In addition, the class always starts with some quick conversation and guiding questions to review and reinforce previous lessons. Our curricula builds upon itself, deepening the pathways in your brain until speaking Spanish becomes second nature.
4. It Tailors Itself to Each Learner
The “one size fits all” philosophy doesn’t work well when it comes to learning a language. We all learn differently, depending on our age, background, and experience. Thus, each HSA program is specifically designed with the student in mind. The teacher is there to help you when you have questions. Our experienced teachers create customized lessons to fit your specific strengths, challenges, and goals. They focus on you, your skills, and your improvement since, after all, you are the reason for the class.

Will You Choose HSA?

HSA strives to make the experience of learning Spanish effective for each student. Our online Spanish classes in Guatemala are delivered in a way that will make using Spanish in real life natural and fun! It’s wonderful to be able to read books in Spanish, watch Spanish-language films, or chat with a relative in a Spanish-speaking country.
As a parent, you have a lot of choices for online classes, but not many offer live, in-person Spanish tutoring. Instead, the majority rely on automated lessons your child can click through.
When students have a real teacher to interact with during classes and tutoring sessions, the learning dynamic changes.
Most importantly, your learner will develop an authentic connection with their Spanish instructor. Research suggests that frequent and natural conversations in Spanish not only reinforce your learner’s language skills, but also strongly improve motivation and engagement in the learning process.
At the end of each class, HSA teachers make notes for the next class and brainstorm ideas to help you succeed. They also schedule periodic meetings with you to talk about your progress in Spanish. It’s incredibly helpful to receive feedback and reflect on how much you are improving.

Benefit from a Clear Accent with Online Spanish Classes in Guatemala
Spanish is spoken in dozens of countries, and some regional accents are more difficult to understand than others. If you’re ready to learn fluent Spanish, you’ll benefit from starting with a simple and straightforward dialect that can be understood anywhere in the world.
Luckily, Guatemala has a reputation for being one of the best places to learn Spanish because of its easy-to-understand accent and friendly, service-oriented teachers.
Guatemala’s uniquely clear Spanish dialect is a result of approximately half of its population being of indigenous Mayan descent. With so many inhabitants who speak Spanish as their second language, Guatemalans tend to have slow and clear pronunciation. Plus, the accent doesn’t contain the irregularities you find in many other Spanish-speaking countries.
This benefits you as a student because you can focus on the learning language rather than deciphering the accent.

The best way to master your target language is to use a combination of various methods of online learning. The more you can immerse yourself in Spanish, the faster your skills will increase!
