Homeschool Spanish Lessons – A Hidden Gem

If you are like me, you are always looking for something different to entertain your kids outside of a cell phone. I just got my daughter her first cell phone for Christmas this past year and it will consume all of her free time if I allow it to. I came across Homeschool Spanish Academy and could not pass up virtual Spanish lessons for my daughter. My daughter is 8 years old, so I thought this would be perfect as an extracurricular activity.

My Experience with Homeschool Spanish Academy

The process of signing up is very simple and straightforward. They give you the luxury of scheduling your classes at a day and time that works for your schedule and they also allow you to pick your teacher. There are time options that vary all day long, so you should have no problem finding a time that fits into your busy schedule.

I preferred to schedule Kamea’s lessons after school around 4 pm CST. This gave her time to get home and grab a snack before her lessons started. I did not want to schedule them too late because I wanted her alert and, in the mood, to learn.

Homeschool Spanish Academy is user-friendly. If you aren’t very tech-savvy, you should have no problem navigating the website. If you do run into any issues, their customer service team is prompt and very helpful. Any time that I had a question, someone got back to me almost immediately. Their staff and everyone behind the scenes are super nice. The lessons are approximately 25 minutes which is perfect for children in terms of attention span.

Benefits of Being Bilingual

My daughter was very excited to start taking lessons. She is in the 3rd grade and really had no idea why she was taking Spanish lessons, so I explained the benefits of being bilingual.

1. Increase Awareness of Other Cultures

Being bilingual allows you to learn different customs, ideas, and perspectives of different cultures.

2. Enhances Your Brainpower

Learning Spanish as a second language is a great way to keep your mind stimulated long with a healthy and sharp brain. Research shows that being bilingual can improve a person’s multitasking skills, attention control, problem-solving, and creativity as it promotes outside-the-box thinking.

3. Increases Competitiveness in Today’s Job Market

Research shows that speaking a second language can provide more job opportunities, depending on which language you speak. There are many jobs in the U.S. that are looking for Spanish-speaking candidates. Communication in the workplace is important, and more companies, especially those with international offices, are considering bilingualism a very high priority. Being able to communicate with foreign clients or customers is considered a big advantage which in turn will allow them to make more money.

According to eb.org, There have been many studies proving that being bilingual can benefit one’s health. There is growing evidence to suggest that bilingualism can delay the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease for example.

Other benefits of being bilingual include things such as faster stroke recovery, lower stress levels, and delay in many effects of old to name a few. There is also an educational advantage. Eb.org states that many studies show that those who speak a second language are more likely to be less distracted and more focused on tasks. Even bilingual children who are educated in their second language have actually been seen to outperform monolingual students in their native language.

Speaking a second language has numerous employment benefits. Being bilingual means that there are more job opportunities depending on which languages you speak. Communication in the workplace is important, and more companies, especially those with international offices, are considering bilingualism a high priority. Fast-growing fields such as tourism, journalism, and translation put great value on bilingual employees. Additional languages on a resume could have an application moved to the top of the pile and give the applicant a better chance at getting the job, even if he/she isn’t as qualified as another monolingual applicant.

Why HSA Is the Way To Go

When you have a class scheduled with Homeschool Spanish Academy, you will get reminders leading up to your scheduled class so that you don’t forget. The teacher is always on time and is patient when it comes to teaching the courses.

Kamea, my daughter, started off learning the alphabet and had homework to go over after her lesson for the day. This helped me out as a parent because it gave her something to do outside of work from school.

On days that she didn’t have school, I would schedule her lessons simultaneously at a time that I would be in the office working so she could have something to do. Any homework would be uploaded into the student portal and I would just print it off. I spent time going over it with her so that she would be prepared for her lessons. I took Spanish in college, and I was quickly reminded that I needed a refresher.

One key benefit that prompted me to try Homeschool Spanish Academy was some research I found on dana.org. It stated Being bilingual can have tangible practical benefits. The improvements in cognitive and sensory processing driven by bilingual experience may help a bilingual person to better process information in the environment, leading to a clearer signal for learning. This kind of improved attention to detail may help explain why bilingual adults learn a third language better than monolingual adults who learn a second language.

The bilingual language-learning advantage may be rooted in the ability to focus on information about the new language while reducing interference from the languages they already know. This ability would allow bilingual people to more easily access newly learned words, leading to larger gains in vocabulary than those experienced by monolingual people who aren’t as skilled at inhibiting competing information.

I am thinking about enrolling my 3-year-old in Spanish lessons this fall after he turns 4 since there are so many educational benefits to learning a second language. I am beyond impressed with the convenience of virtual Spanish lessons offered by Homeschool Spanish Academy.

The best part is that the entire family can take lessons. They have classes for different age groups and levels. I am going to start taking the classes myself. One great thing I learned was that the classes are transferrable. If you enroll your child and they are not interested, you can always transfer the classes to someone else or even yourself! How awesome is this?!
