How Our 7-Year-Old Got Fluent In Spanish With Homeschool Spanish Academy
We have always struggled to keep our 7-year-old, Kingston, interested and engaged in school.
We’ve known since she started public school online that her needs were different from other students in her grade. She would be staring at the screen while the other kids were learning their ABCs. Meanwhile, she was doing double-digit addition and writing complete sentences.
After the first 9 weeks, we decided to pull her out and start homeschooling. Even then, we had to rush through the parts that she already knew so we could move on to something more challenging for her.
Homeschooling became a huge part of our lives. It was important for us to choose the right curriculum, which was challenging. There are so many out there that it’s truly overwhelming!
How Homeschool Spanish Academy Helped Us
When we heard about Homeschool Spanish Academy, we were immediately hooked. The program challenged our daughter and gave her the opportunity to learn on a deeper level. It also provided her with an amazing opportunity to learn about other cultures—specifically, that of Latin America.
We had been looking for a class Kingston could take that not only gave her the best possible takeaway but also was fun and engaging. The decision to use Homeschool Spanish Academy was easy. With a few hours of research into the company, we knew that this was the one for us. Learning Spanish from the comfort of our home with tailored learning from native Spanish speakers, what’s not to love?
HSA teaches by immersion. The teacher asks the students questions in Spanish and lets them learn in a natural way. I had always been told that immersion is the way to learn, but never took the time to make it happen. After all, this is how we learn as babies. We hear constant words in another language, so we eventually develop the skill of learning, the key phrases that develop into sentences, and then develop into fluency!
The teachers in HSA are wonderful and are constantly building her up! They are kind and make every class feel like it was designed specifically for her.
My daughter is three classes in, and she knows basic greetings, her ABCs, and a few of the most common fruits. We’re amazed at the progress she’s made so far!
Lessons We’ve Learned While Homeschooling
When it comes to Homeschooling, it is important to note your own child’s level and their ability to learn and comprehend.
Kids at this age are so influential and create lasting thoughts, ideas, and memories. You’ve heard it before—their brains are like sponges right now. They can soak up all of this information and it will last a lifetime.
Along with Spanish, we have been teaching our daughter ASL. My wife minored in ASL in college and is fluent. I only started learning basic signing 3 years ago and recently picked it up again so I can have a conversation, but it doesn’t flow easily. We taught our daughter from a young age basic signs. She can’t form a sentence, but she can communicate what she wants. We are hoping that by the age of 10 she will be pretty fluent in ASL.
It’s crazy to think that right now constitutes the most important years for her development. What we do and how we care for her right now is going to impact her mentality moving forward, her attitude, her amount of respect, her own self-respect, and many more!
If you are homeschooling your kids, (and even if you’re not!), keep in mind that the key is to lead by example. If you are just preaching to your kids, but they see you constantly doing something else then they aren’t going to take you seriously.
Of course, keep in mind that everyone makes mistakes. Everyone has things they are working on. We aren’t perfect and it’s okay to show your kids that! Show them that it’s okay to mess up if you’re willing to continue working on it!
Teach Them Young
Teach them young. Teach them to love everyone. To channel their creative energy. That they are powerful. Teach them to be anything they want to be.
Before becoming a mom, it wasn’t as important for me. Yeah, I wanted the next generation of humans to be respectful, open-minded and raised with dignity. However, now that I have a child of my own, it really has a different kind of meaning.
With the diversity of the population in the US, learning new languages is really becoming an easy way to immerse yourself into different cultures. Understanding other’s backgrounds and customs is essential to be a kind and well-rounded individual.
My wife and I are trying to give our 7-year-old the best possible homeschooling experience out there and that is why we chose to live life on the road. We want our daughter to be exposed to as much diversity so she can learn and grow. Sadly, racism is not dead. No matter how you want to portray it, it is still very prevalent in the world today. We are hoping to teach our daughter that just because you speak a different language, or you date the same sex, or you have a different skin color, doesn’t mean you are any better than they are. You are the same kind of different as they are.

“It’s a great way to learn Spanish, from native Spanish speakers in a 1-on-1 environment. It’s been fairly easy to schedule classes around my daughter’s other classes. The best value for us has been ordering multiple classes at a time. All the instructors have been great!”
