Resources to Check Spanish Grammar and Spelling
Spanish grammar and spell checkers help you detect errors including typos and gender errors that you may overlook in the proofreading process. To ensure your Spanish is regionally appropriate, look for a spell checker that has region or country settings. Using Spanish grammar and spell check can even help you learn more about the language; by seeing the errors you’ve made, you learn how to correct them.

Let’s check out several of the best options currently available!
1. Word
Microsoft Word offers a Spanish-language spell checker that doubles as a grammar checker. You can select your country of choice from a huge array of Spanish-speaking countries, so this is a helpful way to ensure your grammar and spelling are regionally appropriate. To update your language settings, go to the “Tools” menu. From there, click “Language” and then “Set Language” to choose which type of Spanish you want.
2. Gmail
Gmail has a built-in Spanish spell checker, so you can spell check your Spanish-language emails on the spot. To change the language setting, use the down arrow in the bottom right-hand corner of the window where you’re composing the message. Click “Check Spelling.” If you have your language set to English, it’ll automatically check it as an English-language document first. Look to the bottom right corner again. Next to the “Recheck” button, there’s another down arrow. Click it and select “español.” Note that Gmail only fixes typos and not grammar. For longer and more important messages, consider using an additional spell checker that also checks grammar.
3. Google Docs
Did you know that Google Docs offers Spanish spell check? To access it from the main Google Docs screen, click the menu in the blue bar. Then, click “Settings,” then “English.” From there, click the “Language” bar. You can then change your main language to Spanish or add it as an additional language. Once you click “Español,” you’ll also get to choose the country. Now, the Spanish language is part of your account. When you use spell check, it will recognize both Spanish and English words. Of course, spell check in Google Docs is imperfect. To correct grammar errors like gender agreement, proofread manually or consider using a more robust grammar and spell checker.
4. Chrome
If you often write in Spanish on online forms, message boards, social media sites, or job applications, changing your Google Chrome language settings is a good idea. While it will miss some major issues, Chrome can certainly point out your typos. To change the language settings, click the top right box with three lines. Then, click “Settings” and “Show advanced settings.” Under the “Languages” heading, click “Language and input settings.” From here, you can add “Spanish”—and any regional variations desired—to your list of languages.
5. Stilus
Another great online spell checker is Stilus. It revises not only the individual words but also the linguistic context. It even provides a didactic explanation and related bibliography. Stilus can help you avoid Spanish grammar flaws. It saves time by conducting multiple documental searches, letting you work more efficiently. It’s not the perfect remedy (no automatic checker is), but it’s a fantastic tool to use in improving your written Spanish.
6. SpanishChecker.com
SpanishChecker is a solid choice for beginners and intermediate Spanish learners, since its interface and explanations are in English. This option is available automatically if you’re in an English-speaking country. However, if you’re living and studying in a Spanish-speaking country, you’ll have to change the language by scrolling down to the bottom right and clicking on the tiny English button. It’s worth noting that SpanishChecker isn’t the best at catching errors related to prepositions or agreement between adjectives and nouns.
7. LanguageTool
LanguageTool is a top-rated free online Spanish grammar checker for those who can understand explanations in Spanish. It will discover most spelling and grammar errors, though it’s somewhat weak on gender agreement. The explanations of the issues in Spanish help you both improve your grammar and spelling and learn more about the language in the process. LanguageTool flags gender issues with articles, which are common mistakes for Spanish learners at all levels. These are labeled as a posible falta de concordancia de género (possible lack of gender agreement). You may need to figure out what the exact issue is by consulting your Spanish dictionary.

Tool Checkers vs People Checkers
It’s always a good idea to do a manual proofread in addition to using one or more of the Spanish grammar tools listed above. While computerized checkers will detect some errors, they aren’t flawless. Also, be sure to review any changes spell check suggests, rather than automatically or blindly accepting them. Use what you already know about Spanish to confirm that the suggestions actually improve your writing.
