Top 12 Must-Try Panaderías and Confiterías of Argentina

If you have a sweet tooth and are planning to travel to Argentina, going to an Argentinian panadería (bakery) is a must! Argentinian panaderías have a delightful selection of delicious traditional desserts.

At the many confiterías (candy shops) in Argentina, people stop by for a cup of coffee and a piece of cake, candy, or bread. These Argentinian panaderías are beautiful, and their sweets are edible works of art.

Because there’s such a major European influence in Argentina, Italians and Spaniards established many of these bakeries.

Read on to learn more about the 12 must-try panaderías and confiterías of Argentina.

Origin of Argentinian Pastelerías

In the mid to late-19th century, Argentina welcomed many European immigrants, especially from Italy and Spain. They brought ideas for a free society where everybody would be treated equally.

Errico Malatesta was an Italian anarchist who formed a trade union for local bakers. In 1887, la Sociedad Cosmopolita de Resistencia y Colocación de Obreros Panaderos (the Cosmopolitan Society of Resistance and Placement of Bakery Workers) closed down bakeries and went on strike. They fought for their freedom to run their bakeries and got it.

Nowadays, Argentinian panaderías and confiterías are full of delicious pastries, cakes, and bread. It’s common to have an Argentinian pastry with your café con leche (coffee and milk) and as a mid-afternoon snack.
