How Studying Spanish in High School Benefits You
Studying Spanish in high school exposes you to a new language and culture. High school is the perfect place to learn many subjects and figure out what you want to do after school.
Other important benefits to studying Spanish in high school include:
- Learning about the culture, customs, and language of Spain and Latin America
- Improving the quality of your transcript for colleges or secondary schools that require foreign language studies
- Developing critical skills such as concentration, multi-tasking, problem-solving, and long-term memory retention.
Of course, these benefits come with learning a language at any age. However, your brain is still developing in high school and absorbs these improvements more readily. Studying a new language equips you with these critical skills to succeed in all areas of your life.
Spanish In the Classroom vs. Spanish Online
Many students must take mandatory Spanish classes in high school in a traditional classroom setting. While this may seem like the typical way to learn Spanish, there is actually a better way: online Spanish classes for high school credit.
Why Classrooms Don’t Cut It
The downside of your typical high school Spanish class is that it has too many students, a strict curriculum, and a lack of focus on actually speaking the language. Furthermore, many teachers aren’t even native Spanish speakers. While they may have a great mastery of the language, their accent will not be natural. They may make small mistakes that the students will pick up subconsciously.
Why Online Spanish Classes Are Superior
In online Spanish classes, you receive instruction from native Spanish speakers. Not only do these instructors have complete mastery of the target language, but they are also able to further enhance your understanding of conversational Spanish, slang, and culture. More importantly, your native Spanish-speaking teacher will immerse you in the language, which ensures that you begin to speak it.
We naturally learn our mother language through immersion. And it’s clear that this is the most effective way to learn a new language.
Online Spanish Classes with HSA
Homeschool Spanish Academy’s online Spanish classes for high school credit are personalized and tailored to the student. Our sessions include one-on-one options or paired classes. The teacher focuses entirely on you as a student: your abilities, your needs, and your learning style. Instead of being lost in a sea of 20 or 30 other students who require the teacher’s attention, you get a chance to learn Spanish, actively practice your speaking skills, and ask any questions you may have.
At HSA, we not only offer personalized instruction, but a customizable curriculum. If you’ve already learned a certain topic, your teacher can quiz you on the essentials and then move you to the next step of the curriculum faster. Likewise, if you need more help with a specific topic, you have the flexibility to take the time you need to truly learn the information.
Why Is High School Credit for Spanish Classes Important?
One of the main reasons to get language credits is for college applications. The majority of colleges and universities require at least two years of foreign language study in high school. Two years is just the minimum requirement, so if you want to go to a more prestigious university, they may require three to four years of foreign language study.
The great thing about online Spanish classes for high school credit is that you can take classes over the summer and earn an extra half or full credit.
Even if you aren’t thinking about going to college immediately after high school, you can use the language classes you take while in high school at a later date. For example, if you want to take a gap year, your Spanish language credits will still be there for you when you are ready to apply to secondary school.
Homeschool Spanish Academy’s High School Spanish Program
At HSA, we offer Spanish classes for all high school levels—from Spanish I to IV.
Spanish I to IV
Each level is broken into two subsections, called A and B. Ideally, you will complete level A in the fall semester and level B in the spring semester. However, since our classes are personalized, you can start them whenever you are ready.
Schedule
Each semester has 30 classes that last 50 minutes each. Most of our students choose to take two classes a week, so you will complete each semester in 15 weeks, or about 4 months.
If you want, you can take 4 classes a week or just 1. The schedule is completely up to you.
Placement
If you have already taken Spanish classes, we will give you a placement test to see which level would be best for you. However, if you want to start at Spanish I to review the basics and have a strong foundation, that’s also completely fine.
Live, Native Spanish
All of our Spanish classes are live and online. Our certified Spanish teachers are all native speakers from Guatemala. Even though we have a specific curriculum that our teachers follow, they still incorporate an impressive amount of conversation into each class to ensure you can speak Spanish in real-life situations.
Credit and Transcripts
Compared to other online Spanish class options, our classes are very affordable and flexible. Plus, most online platforms don’t offer classes for high schoolers because they don’t get credit. However, HSA offers a transcript for each level you take. You can also get the curriculum approved by your high school if you choose to take these classes instead of the regular in-person option.
