Improve Your Spanish Skills as a Family

Good family movies in Spanish are an excellent way to practice your skills. They draw your attention into the storyline as you focus on understanding the plot and dialogue.

Consider writing down new words you don’t know during the movie viewing. Write a summary after the movie is over and compare notes with the family.

If you’re a parent looking for kids movies, check out these 15 Incredible Mexican Movies for Kids. They’ll have your kids enthralled by the storyline and make for great family discussions.

To support your listening comprehension, watch the movie in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. If possible, avoid English subtitles and translations, as they will only slow down your learning.

This is a great movie to watch with your family and discuss how we can grow from the challenges in our lives. Try watching it in Spanish without subtitles at first. If you find this too difficult, turn on the Spanish subtitles.

In this enchanting movie, four kids are sent to detention and run into an old video game called Jumanji. They’re suddenly stuck in the video game and have to find a way to break free by embarking on a jungle adventure.

The Rock and Jack Black star in this update of the exciting comedy based on the 1995 original with Robin Williams. It’s a classic story full of challenging endeavors that’s ideal for the whole family! This is a favorite when it comes to Spanish films and a magical way to practice your skills.

Enola Holmes is Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister. She wakes up to find her beloved mother missing. Against her brothers’ wishes, she embarks on a solo adventure in search of her mom.

Enola is very much her own person in how she goes about playing detective. She is an empowered and independent young woman who looks straight into the camera and talks to the audience throughout the movie. It’s a feel-good mystery movie that addresses important issues that you can discuss with your family.

4. Pachamama

Original language: English

Watch the Spanish trailer

This movie is about indigenous traditions of the Andean culture in South America. A young boy who lives in a remote village takes it upon himself to rescue a valuable relic and embarks on a dangerous journey to Cusco, Peru.

Pachamama is the mother goddess in the indigenous belief systems of the Andes mountains. Her name means “Mother World,” and she is associated with the earth and fertility. She is known as a survivor and is still worshiped by many communities in the Andes.

5. Rango

Director: Gore Verbinski

Release date: 2011

Original language: English

Watch the Spanish trailer

Brilliant filmmaker Gore Verbinski wanted to try his hand at animation after Pirates of the Caribbean and found success in animation, as well. Rango won an Oscar and has become a family favorite. Rango follows a chameleon who gets lost and runs into a Western town populated with animals, where he portrays himself as a tough drifter.

The desperate people of the town ask Rango to become their new sheriff, and it makes for a hilarious story that you can watch in Spanish with the whole family.

6. Lluvia de Albóndigas (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs)

Director: Chris Miller, Phil Lord

Release date: 2009

Original language: English

Watch the Spanish trailer

This film is a classic when it comes to good family movies to watch together. It has goofy humor, great jokes related to reality and fantasy alike. Bill Hader is the voice of Flint, a scientist who hasn’t had much luck with his inventions. He lives in a tiny town called Swallow Falls and it all becomes chaotic when Flint’s wild invention starts to turn water into food. Soon enough, all sorts of delicious food falls from the sky.

It’s a superb film for all ages with a terrifically science-positive story. It encourages creativity and hope so that you never give up on your dreams, no matter how crazy they may seem.

7. El Principito (The Little Prince)

Director: Mark Osborne

Release date: 2015

Original language: English

Watch the Spanish trailer

This has always been one of my all-time favorite stories. It is adapted from the 1943 novella by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. This beloved classic is about a pilot who gets lost and runs into a young boy. Unexpectedly, the little prince teaches the pilot valuable life lessons.

The film is smart, deep, and visually striking. It is voiced by Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, Paul Rudd, and many others.

8. Los Hermanos Willoughby

Director: Kris Pearn

Release date: 2020

Original language: English

Watch the Spanish trailer

I love the humor in The Willoughbys. Voiced by Will Forte and Maya Rudolph, this clever movie is based on the book by Lois Lowry. It’s the story of two twins, Barnaby A and Barnaby B, who are abandoned by their parents. It’s a feel-good story about how anybody can find happiness if they’re willing to fight for it.

It is an interesting story to discuss as a family since it is about a dysfunctional family and how to deal with such situations.

9. Blancanieves (Mirror Mirror)

Director: Tarsem Singh

Release date: 2012

Original language: English

Watch the English trailer

This is, of course, the story of Snow White and how she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and love. Although based on The Brothers Grimm version of the tale, it follows a more modern Snow White. Lily Collins plays the main character and the evil queen is portrayed by Julia Roberts.

The orphaned princess finds her way out of the darkness and into the light. As with most Disney stories, you’ll find a happy ending in this movie that serves as a reminder that good prevails in the end.

10. Mi Villano Favorito (Despicable Me)

Director: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud

Release date: 2010

Original language: English

Watch the Spanish trailer

Despicable Me features Gru, voiced by Steve Carell. He’s your typical bitter villain who only finds joy in making others miserable. He does whatever is needed to succeed in his evil plans.

What is his current evil plan? Well, to steal the moon with the help of his tiny yellow helpers the minions. His plans change when three little girls waltz into his life and turn it upside down. This heartwarming family movie offers adventure and excitement for the whole family, and it proves how anyone can become good with a little bit of love.

11. La Sirenita (The Little Mermaid)

Director: Blake Harris, Chris Bouchard

Release date: 2018

Original language: English

Watch the Spanish trailer

This movie is an update of the 1989 animated version of The Little Mermaid. It’s a live action film that follows Elle. Elle discovers a real mermaid trapped in a glass tank in Mississippi. She discovers that an evil wizard has kept the mermaid from her home deep in the ocean.

Throughout the story, you don’t really know how it’ll unfold since it’s a very different take on the traditional fairy tale. It teaches kids the value of doing what’s right and how everyone deserves to be happy and free.

12. La Pelea Estelar (The Main Event)

Director: Jay Karas

Release date: 2020

Original language: English

Watch the English trailer with Spanish subtitles

This movie follows a boy called Leo who is a huge wrestling fan. He suddenly gets the chance to live out his dream when he finds a magical mask that gives him superpowers. With his newfound power, he enters a WWE competition and it could change his whole life!

I love movies that use Latin American traditions or sports to tell a story because it gives you a glimpse into what those countries are like. This is a cool way to discuss sports in Latin America.

13.  Las Crónicas de Spiderwick (The Spiderwick Chronicles)

Director: Mark Waters

Release date: 2008

Original language: English

Watch the Spanish trailer

This movie is based on the beloved book series of the same name. It’s an adventurous film about a family who discovers magical creatures on the grounds of a family estate.

It’s an adventure that proves how strong children can be. Many times, parents don’t think children are capable of handling big problems. This movie proves otherwise and conveys the importance of parents learning how to let go of their kids when they have grown.

14. Más Allá de la Luna (Over the Moon)

Director: Glen Keane

Release date: 2020

Original Language:

Watch the Spanish trailer

This Netflix original story follows a 12-year-old girl named Fei Fei who has lost her beloved mother to a terminal illness. When her dad is considering remarrying, Fei Fei embarks upon a journey to the moon. On the moon, Fei Fei, her rabbit sidekick and her annoying future step brother find Chang, the goddess of the moon. She is nothing like Fei Fei thought she’d be.

What started as a mournful story turns out to be a beautiful tale of acceptance, love, loss, and mysticism. This Asian story inspires everyone to dream about the moon and its power over us. It’s a lovely story to watch with the family or on your own and practice your Spanish skills.

15. Rip Tide

Director: Rhiannon Bannenberg

Release date: 2017

Original Language: English

Watch the English trailer

The last of our good family movies on the list follows a model who has suffered an internet mishap and decides to take a break. She goes to reconnect with family in a relaxed Australian beach town. She learns to surf and quickly feels at home in a simpler life.

I think this movie addresses lifestyle and how little we need to be happy. In a time of overconsumption, a movie like this can help you practice your Spanish, as well as discuss how life is not about how much you have but more about moments you share with valuable people in your life.
