30+ Spanish Tech Vocabulary Your Middle Schooler Already Uses

Your middle schooler lives in a digital world—chatting, gaming, posting, and streaming daily. But if you’ve ever thought, “How can I make Spanish relevant to that world?” you’re not alone. Many parents feel their child loses interest when Spanish feels disconnected from real life. The good news? You can turn everyday screen time into learning time with Spanish tech vocabulary.

Teaching your child Spanish tech vocabulary makes language instantly useful. Instead of memorizing words they rarely say, your learner can talk about their favorite apps, videos, and games—in Spanish. This gives them both a sense of progress and cultural connection.
In this guide, you’ll learn 30 essential Spanish words and phrases about technology and social media, grouped into easy themes. You’ll also find example sentences and a fun family activity that turns tech talk into Spanish practice.

En Línea (Online Life)

Let’s begin with the basics—the words your child needs to describe their online world.

La Red – The Internet

Ejemplo: Busco información en la Red. — “I look for information on the Internet.”

El Enlace – Link
Used to share or open websites.
Ejemplo: Haz clic en el enlace para ver el video. — “Click the link to watch the video.”

La Aplicación (La App) – Application/App
Refers to mobile or web apps.
Ejemplo: Uso una aplicación para editar fotos. — “I use an app to edit photos.”

La Pantalla – Screen
Applies to phones, tablets, or computers.
Ejemplo: La pantalla de mi tableta está rota. — “My tablet’s screen is broken.”

El Dispositivo – Device
A general term for electronic tools like phones or laptops.
Ejemplo: Tengo tres dispositivos conectados al Wi-Fi. — “I have three devices connected to Wi-Fi.”

El Cargador – Charger
Essential for every digital learner!
Ejemplo: Necesito el cargador para mi teléfono. — “I need the charger for my phone.”

La Contraseña – Password
Used to keep accounts private and secure.
Ejemplo: No compartas tu contraseña con nadie. — “Don’t share your password with anyone.”

These terms give your child the vocabulary to describe their daily interactions online. In fact, learning them helps kids talk about real-life experiences in Spanish—boosting confidence naturally.

En las Redes (On Social Media)

Social media is where kids communicate most, so these words bring Spanish directly into their favorite spaces.

Publicar – To post or publish
Used when sharing photos or updates.
Ejemplo: Voy a publicar una nueva foto. — “I’m going to post a new photo.”

El Perfil – Profile
A page that shows personal information or photos.
Ejemplo: Mi perfil tiene una foto de mi gato. — “My profile has a picture of my cat.”

El Comentario – Comment
Responses or feedback on a post.
Ejemplo: Dejé un comentario en tu video. — “I left a comment on your video.”

Seguir – To follow
Used when subscribing to someone’s account or updates.
Ejemplo: Sigo a mis amigos en redes sociales. — “I follow my friends on social media.”

El Mensaje Directo (MD) – Direct message
Private communication between users.
Ejemplo: Te envío un mensaje directo para contarte. — “I’ll send you a direct message to tell you.”

La Etiqueta / El Hashtag – Tag / Hashtag

La Historia – Story
Temporary posts on apps like Instagram or Facebook.
Ejemplo: Subí una historia de mi viaje. — “I uploaded a story from my trip.”
Teaching these words transforms Spanish into a tool your child uses daily—when texting friends, sharing photos, or commenting on posts. Therefore, vocabulary becomes a living part of their digital routine.

En el Chat (Texting & Communication)

These phrases connect Spanish learning to every message your child sends or receives.

Chatear – To chat
Commonly used for casual online conversations.
Ejemplo: Chateo con mis amigos todos los días. — “I chat with my friends every day.”

Mandar un Mensaje – To send a message
Perfect for both texting and online communication.
Ejemplo: Voy a mandar un mensaje por WhatsApp. — “I’m going to send a message on WhatsApp.”

Responder – To reply
Used when answering messages or comments.
Ejemplo: Responde al mensaje cuando puedas. — “Reply to the message when you can.”

Subir / Bajar – To upload / To download
Important verbs for digital actions.
Ejemplo: Subo fotos y bajo música todos los días. — “I upload photos and download music every day.”

El Emoji – Emoji
Used to express emotion visually in chats.
Ejemplo: Me gusta usar emojis en mis mensajes. — “I like using emojis in my messages.”

La Videollamada – Video call
Used for live conversations via video.
Ejemplo: Tenemos una videollamada con los abuelos. — “We have a video call with the grandparents.”

Bloquear / Desbloquear – To block / To unblock
Useful when talking about online safety.
Ejemplo: Bloquea a los usuarios desconocidos. — “Block unknown users.”
These words help your child navigate communication in Spanish just as easily as they do in English. Additionally, they reinforce digital responsibility—an important life skill.

En el Juego (Gaming and Apps)

Because many middle schoolers learn best through play, these gaming words will make Spanish learning exciting.

El Videojuego – Video game
Refers to any game played on a screen.
Ejemplo: Mi videojuego favorito es de aventuras. — “My favorite video game is an adventure game.”

El Jugador / La Jugadora – Player
Used to describe anyone who plays.
Ejemplo: El jugador gana puntos en cada nivel. — “The player earns points at each level.”

Ganar / Perder – To win / To lose
Core verbs for any game.
Ejemplo: No me gusta perder, pero aprendo jugando. — “I don’t like losing, but I learn while playing.”

El Nivel – Level or stage
Commonly used to track progress.
Ejemplo: Subí al nivel cinco ayer. — “I reached level five yesterday.”

El Puntaje – Score
A number representing your success in a game.
Ejemplo: Mi puntaje fue más alto esta vez. — “My score was higher this time.”

La Actualización – Update or upgrade
Used for software or game changes.
Ejemplo: La actualización trae nuevos personajes. — “The update brings new characters.”
In contrast to traditional learning, using gaming vocabulary allows Spanish to enter your child’s world naturally. It shows that language can be playful, practical, and exciting—all at once.

Cuidado Digital (Digital Safety)

Spanish isn’t only for fun—it’s also useful for talking about online safety, privacy, and responsibility.

Privado / Público – Private / Public
Describes account visibility.
Ejemplo: Mi perfil es privado. — “My profile is private.”

Reportar – To report
Used to flag inappropriate content.
Ejemplo: Debes reportar los comentarios ofensivos. — “You should report offensive comments.”

El Respeto – Respect
Encourages kindness in digital interactions.
Ejemplo: El respeto es importante en línea. — “Respect is important online.”

El Acoso en Línea – Cyberbullying
A serious term to recognize harmful behavior.
Ejemplo: El acoso en línea puede causar daño emocional. — “Cyberbullying can cause emotional harm.”

Seguro / Segura – Safe
Describes responsible, careful use of the internet.
Ejemplo: Mantén tus datos seguros. — “Keep your data safe.”

By including this theme, parents can guide children toward being both bilingual and responsible digital citizens. Accordingly, learning Spanish becomes a chance to discuss empathy and values.

Mini Activity: “Mi Mundo Digital en Español” (My Digital World in Spanish)

Now it’s time to apply what you’ve learned! Have your child draw or list their digital world—favorite apps, games, or platforms. Then, label each with the new vocabulary: la app, el perfil, la pantalla, el videojuego. Encourage them to write three short sentences in Spanish, for example:

“Uso la aplicación para escuchar música.” — “I use the app to listen to music.”
“Mi perfil es privado.” — “My profile is private.”
“Subo fotos todos los fines de semana.” — “I upload photos every weekend.”
This short creative activity combines writing, speaking, and personal connection—helping your learner truly make the words their own.

“I love that my children have the opportunity to speak with a live person. They get to practice Spanish in a 1-1 setting while improve their speaking, writing and reading skills during their lessons. HSA is a great way to learn Spanish for all ages! My children are 6, 9 and 11. My oldest two (9 and 11) have been taking classes with HSA for almost 2 years now. They love seeing their teacher each week. They understand the importance of learning several languages. I’ve seen them grow and learn with HSA. I’m excited to see how they will improve the more classes they take. I highly recommend them. You can’t bet learning and speaking with a live teacher. I’ve tried other programs. It’s just not as motivating.”
