A Vocabulary Guide to Scuba Diving in Spanish

Would you like to learn how to say scuba diving in Spanish? There’s a verb for it: bucear. Scuba diving in unknown waters and discovering marine life is one of the coolest experiences ever!

FUN FACT: The word buzo/a in Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador means “skillful person.”

Scuba Diving in Spanish Conjugation

First, let’s review the verb bucear in Spanish. People in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Argentina, Uruguay, and some Latin American cities use el voseo. Don’t forget that the pronoun usted is the formal “you.”

PRO TIP: While the equivalent to el imperfecto del indicativo is the simple past, in English, this Spanish tense, is more directly related to the “use(d) to…” modal. For example, yo buceaba means “I used to scuba dive”.

The average diver goes down 40 ft (12 m), while advanced divers may go as deep as 130 ft (40m). Talking about depth when diving is necessary. For that it is important to learn numbers in Spanish and units of measurement.
