The Origin of International Women’s Day
El día de la mujer (International Women’s Day) is celebrated every March 8th.
This special date unites women from all nationalities and backgrounds under one same cause: honoring their accomplishments and the struggle that women have endured to procure their modern rights.
Believe it or not, many years ago, women’s voices didn’t have the relevance and importance we now enjoy. The right to vote and access to better work conditions were just a dream.
The celebration of International Women’s Day dates back to 1908, when a group of women was employed by a textile factory in New York under precarious conditions. Tired and frustrated with being mistreated and exploited, these courageous women took a stand against injustice and inequality.

This group of admirable women demanded the reduction of sixteen working hours to ten. What’s more, they were also paid a third of the salary male employees earned, so equal pay was also a priority.
With fear and uncertainty, the women grew tired of being overlooked for their efforts and decided to protest. Unfortunately, the textile factory closed its doors in hopes of dissolving the protest, and 129 women were killed in a fire inside.
The lives of these women and the disregard for decent working conditions traveled the world and inspired many more to honor them. In 1909, the United States celebrated the first National Women’s Day.
Supported by the socialist movement of Copenhague, the women’s movement started to gain momentum in 1910 in hopes of achieving women’s international right to vote. It took more support from other countries and much effort for the movement to become what we know today.
In 1977, the United Nations officially appointed International Women’s Day as an important global date. It’s when we commemorate and honor those women who fought for equality among society, and when we pay our respects to those who gave their lives for this valuable cause.

Dream Weaving
For this ingenious activity, you’ll need purple yarn, and purple construction paper squares.
Give each of your students a blank piece of purple construction paper and have them write a Spanish sentence about their dream world for girls and women.
Have each student present what they wrote to the classroom one by one. At the end of the activity, you will use the yarn to tie together all the paper squares into a long garland.
The color purple has a special meaning on women’s day. It’s believed that the women who died in the 1908 factory fire, were working on purple garments at the time. This activity is designed to honor their struggle, and share how our world can keep improving for women and girls around the world. .
