Learn 15 Spanish Verbs for Easier Beginner Conversations [with Audio]

Are you ready to learn Spanish verbs? The 15 basic verbs in this article will help you start speaking a new language today!

The best way to start learning Spanish vocabulary and verbs is to get yourself motivated. You may feel overwhelmed from all the information, unfamiliar sounds and the present, past, and future tenses. But trust me, eventually you’ll be singing Spanish songs and reading books in Spanish.

I wrote these 15 Spanish verbs as a Spanish infinitives list with present conjugations and example sentences so you can start practicing right away. Be sure to listen to the audios to practice your pronunciation.

Let’s learn Spanish verbs!

1. Ser – To Be (permanent)

Of all the important Spanish verbs, “to be” is the one at the top. The verb “to be” translates to two different verbs in Spanish: ser and estar. 

Use ser to describe what and who you are: what your profession is, who you’re related to, what’s your personality, and so on. Learn this conjugation list and try repeating the example sentences.

Yo soy doctor.
I am a doctor.

She is my mother.
Ella es mi madre.

Nosotros somos canadienses.

You are kind.

2. Estar – To Be (temporary)

Estar, on the other hand, tells you where someone is or about an emotion a person is having. Learning Spanish verbs like this help you out in the most basic conversations.

We areNosotros estamos

Yo estoy en México.
I am in Mexico.

Él está enojado.
He is mad. 

Nosotros estamos de vacaciones.
We are on holiday.

Ustedes están en lo cierto.
You guys are right.

3. Haber – To Have (Auxiliary Verb)

Haber is one of the most commonly used verbs in Spanish. Even if you are a little afraid to use it, it will really help you to spot it.

Tú has estudiado mucho.
You have been studying a lot.

Ellos han querido venir. 
They have wanted to come.

4. Querer – To Want

Learning the Spanish verb querer (to want) will help you at a restaurant, pharmacy, or grocery store. Expressing what you want is useful in any language.

I wantYo quiero
You wantTú quieres
He, she, it wantsÉl, ella, eso, usted quiere
We wantNosotros queremos
You wantUstedes quieren
They wantEllos quieren

Tú quieres justicia.
You want justice.

Nosotros queremos salir.
We want to go out.

Ustedes quieren saber.
You guys want to know.

Ellos quieren ser felices.
They want to be happy.

5. Hacer – To Do

The Spanish verb hacer translates to both “to do” and “to make.”

Tú haces un pastel. 
You make a cake.

Ella hace dinero.
She makes money.

6. Tener – To Have

Tener is “to have”, in this context “have” is no longer an auxiliary verb as in number 3 of this Spanish verbs list.

We haveNosotros tenemos
You haveUstedes tienen
They haveEllos tienen

You tengo dudas.
I have doubts.

Tú tienes gusto.

7. Saber – To Know

You deserve to know important Spanish verbs like this. This will become very helpful when you want to ask questions.

8. Ir – To Go

Learn Spanish verbs like ir so you feel comfortable telling people your plans in Spanish.

9. Decir – To Say

The verb decir is basic in a conversation while practicing this Spanish verbs list.

10. Comer – To Eat

12. Beber – To Drink

13. Comprar – To Buy

Comprar is a key part of this list of important Spanish verbs, especially if you need to book a flight or buy a ticket to go somewhere.
