How to Choose Your Homeschool Psychology Curriculum

Choosing electives in high school is always tricky, as parents must balance a genuinely beneficial course and their children’s likes and dislikes.

At the end of the day, these courses are called “electives” precisely because that’s where students can start directing their studies towards their areas of interest.

Finding a good homeschool psychology curriculum for your child isn’t as easy as finding a math curriculum.

There aren’t as many options to choose from, and you also have to consider if you want to select a secular or Christian curriculum, which cuts your options in half.

6 Top-Rated Homeschool Psychology Curriculum

To help you find the right homeschool psychology curriculum for your child, I’ve put together this list with the 6 top-rated programs, divided into two categories: secular and Christian.

Secular Options

The following are my top-3 secular homeschool psychology curriculums, where you can find different approaches, but all online-based.

1. Saylor Academy

Saylor Academy is a non-profit organization that provides free and open online courses for high school and college students. PSYCH101: Introduction to Psychology is an excellent elective option as it’s complete, free, and offers the possibility of getting college credit.

Mission: “To open education to all.”

Instructional Style: Online self-paced learning experience with no graded homework, no attendance verification, and no teacher.

Standards: ACE, AP CLEP.

Assessments: Open book quizzes, exams, and midterm exams. A final exam to earn a free course completion certificate.

Then, you can also take three Saylor Direct Credit quizzes to help you prepare for the Saylor Direct Credit Final Exam, which requires a proctoring fee of $5 and provides college credit and an official transcript (if earning a grade of 70% or higher).

Additional Resources: Articles, lectures, and videos.

Price: The course is entirely free, but you need to pay a proctoring fee of $5 to take the Direct Credit final exam and get college credit.

2. Oak Meadow

Oak Meadow offers an engaging, flexible, Waldorf-style education for independent students from preschool to grade 12th.

Their course “Psychology: Journey Towards Self-Knowledge” is a severe and well-designed curriculum that covers some of the leading psychology topics such as biology behavior, learning and conditioning, memory, and personality theory.

Mission: “To help students and families experience the joy of learning and create meaningful change in the world.”

Instructional Style: You can buy their book-based curriculum and use it independently or enroll in their distance learning school. Hands-on activities and overarching themes, with lots of reading, writing, critical thinking, projects, and reflection.

Standards: The distance learning school is accredited by New England Association for Schools and Colleges. They also provide customers with supplemental assignments to comply with Common Core Standards.

Assessments: No quizzes or tests.

Additional Resources: Articles, lectures, and videos.

Price: Coursebook for $75 and Course package for $275.

3. Time 4 Learning

Time 4 Learning is a standards-based online PreK-12 curriculum that covers all a homeschooled child needs to study.

Their High School Psychology is an elective course that serves its purpose as an introduction to the subject, starting with the history of psychology, research methods, disorders, and more.

Goal: “To give students an understanding of human behavior.”

Instructional Style: Fun, engaging activities featured in an overarching theme, such as playtime, safari, and cooking. They were designed for all types of learning styles and students with special needs.

Standards: Correlates to all state standards.

Assessments: Flexibility to retake tests and quizzes.

Additional Resources: Full curricula for other subjects, lesson plans, scope and sequence, videos, worksheets, and quizzes.

Price: $34.95 per month with access to a complete high school curriculum (not only psychology).

Christian Options

The following three psychology curriculums are faith-based and provide an approach consistent with Christian beliefs.

4. Introduction to Psychology from a Christian Perspective

This book, written by homeschooling mom and licensed professional counselor Vicki Tilman, is a one-semester course available only as an ebook in PDF format.

It explores subjects like the history of psychology, the brain, Christian counseling, and psychological testing.

Goal: To introduce students to psychology from a Christian perspective.

Instructional Style: Short and attractive lessons presented in a way that’s interesting for a teenage student.

Assessments: As a faith-based curriculum, it doesn’t correlate to any standards. However, the book includes instructions on how to make the course ½ or one full credit average high school credit.

Additional Resources: Homework and tests Answer Key, suggested syllabus, links to videos, and lesson plans.

Price: $34.99.

5. Sonlight’s Psychology Program

The Sonlight’s Psychology Program is a great AP Psychology prep option to cover this one-year elective from a faith-based approach. It comes with an AP Psychology textbook by David Myers and Jeff Corson’s workbook and diary.

Goal: “To help prepare students to face the challenges of strengthening their faith in a college/world environment where their faith is challenged every day.”

Instructional Style: Manages a fine balance between the seriousness of an AP textbook and a more light-hearted tone in the faith-based workbook and diary.

Standards: AP.

Assessments: Tests and answer key. Preparation for the AP Psychology exam.

Additional Resources: Workbook and diary.

Price: $354.99.

6. Psychology: A Christian Perspective

Formerly known as “Homeschool Psych,” this book is one of the best options to study an introduction to psychology from a Christian point of view.

Written by Dr. Tim Rice, “Psychology: A Christian Perspective” covers the history of psychology, humanism, evolutionism, moral relativism, and more.

Goal: To familiarize Christian students with psychology.

Instructional Style: Serious, in-depth approach that requires plenty of reading and writing, mostly essays.

Standards: As a faith-based curriculum, it doesn’t align with any standards.

Assessments: Chapter quizzes.

Additional Resources: Teacher’s guide, activities, essay questions, and assignments.

Price: $34.95.
