For thousands of years, buying things has been part of our everyday life, and different types of stores help us to obtain what we need and want! Part of visiting a different country is exploring its businesses and stores in search of gifts and souvenirs. And sometimes you’re looking for familiar names but don’t know the name of a specific store in Spanish.

1. La tienda por departamentos 

A tienda por departamentos (department store) is a place that offers a variety of goods in different areas of the same store. This list will teach you about some of the most common departments:

2. La abarroteria / El Supermercado  

La abarroteria or el supermercado (the grocery store) is the place to buy food and more. If the grocery store is small, it is called la abarroteria in Spanish, and if it is big, it is called el super or el supermercado.

4. Tienda de ropa 

A tienda de ropa (clothing store) is any establishment that sells clothing items already made. If this clothes store is small or expensive, it’s called a “boutique.”

5. La zapatería

La zapatería (shoe store) is a store that specializes in selling and retailing shoes. There are several kinds of zapaterías, some sell just one kind of shoes, while others sell all kinds of shoes! 

And while in most zapaterías you just buy shoes, some also offer to repair them, and others even make the shoes right there and then sell them!
