It’s a Dog Life: Latin America
In Latin America, you may hear dogs being called firuleis. This is the generic name for any dog, akin to how in English we call dogs “Spot” or “Fido.” Everyone has nicknames, even the dogs!
What does a dog’s life look like in Latin America? While Latin America is huge (made up of over 20 countries and territories), it presents an extensive diversity in customs and traditions—but in general, you could say there are three main types of dog cultures. We’ve got rich dogs, farm dogs, and the ever-present street dogs.
Rich Dogs
In wealthier areas, families hold dear to their dogs and treat them like another member of the family. They are well-groomed, pampered with dog clothes and accessories, and protected at all costs. In some areas, they are often kept inside to avoid contact with street dogs.
Farm Dogs
In more agricultural areas, people still own dogs, but the care is different. They are often off-leash and allowed to explore their territory and world. In these areas, dogs are used as a form of protection more than an addition to the family.
Street Dogs
Then, there are the dogs without a home. Street dogs are sadly common throughout Latin America and tend to incite fear and hesitancy in most people who encounter them. When you are walking down the street, it’s possible to come in contact with 20 individual street dogs, or even a pack of dogs following a female dog in heat.
This culture of street dogs affects how people see and treat dogs. Since they have no home, they are seen as a nuisance that steals food and carries disease. They are treated poorly—people may throw stones at them or kick them—and worst of all, some communities purposefully poison them to limit the population growth.
Luckily, organizations like Guatemala Hope for the Animals rescues street dogs, nurturing the injured, and attempts to find them homes.
