Afeitarse Conjugation: Free Spanish Lesson, Quiz, and PDF

Learn how to look neat with this lesson on afeitarse conjugation! Afeitarse translates to “to shave” in English.

Afeitarse is a regular verb that follows the typical conjugation rules for -ar verbs. The root (afeit-) stays the same, and only the suffix changes.

Afeitarse conjugation goes hand-in-hand with the verb amar or to love, as the two follow the same patterns.

Today, we’ll learn afeitarse conjugation in multiple forms, encompassing three moods:

  • Indicative (present, past, conditional, and future)
  • Subjunctive (present and past)
  • Imperative

The Ultimate Guide to Afeitarse Conjugation

If you are not familiar with some of the tenses shown here, don’t worry! With enough practice they will be easy to remember. Especially since this is a perfect example of a regular verb.

Read ahead to find not only the complete guide to afeitarse conjugation, but also exercises to practice your new skills!

Afeitarse Conjugation: Verbals

For these afeitarse conjugations, there are two forms of afeitar that you need to learn.

  1. Conjugation of haber + past participle of afeitar
  2. Conjugation of estar + gerund form of afeitar

The infinitive form of the verb is afeitar.
The past participle of afeitar is afeitado.
The gerund form of afeitar is afeitando.

These compound tenses involve using the helping verbs haber and estar. The afeitarse conjugation changes in these tenses happen within the helping verbs, while the form of afeitar stays the same.

Let’s see them in action:

Hoy por la tarde me tengo que afeitar.
Today in the afternoon I have to shave.

Él no se había afeitado desde noviembre.
He had not shaved since November.

Roberto se está afeitando.
Robert is shaving.

Afeitarse Conjugation: Indicative Mood

Present simple

Yoafeito
Túafeitas
Él, ella, ustedafeita
Nosotrosafeitamos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesafeitan

Keep in mind that the formal construction of tú (you) is usted and its tenses are the exact same as él and ella.

Most actions that have to do with daily routines and personal care are reflexive verbs. Since afeitarse conjugation refers to an act you do to yourself and others, it requires the use of reflexive pronouns: me, te, se, nos. The reflexive pronoun clarifies who is shaving.

Ellos se afeitan en las mañanas.
They shave in the mornings.

Tu te afeitas después de despertar.
You shave after waking up.

Yo me afeito todos los días.
I shave every day.

Nosotros nos afeitamos los fines de semana.
We shave on the weekends.

Check out The Key to Reflexive Pronouns in Spanish!

Past Simple

Yoafeité
Túafeitaste
Él, ella, ustedafeitó
Nosotrosafeitamos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesafeitaron

Here are some tips to use the afeitarse conjugation in past simple:

  • Be sure to place the accents correctly to avoid confusion with other tenses and moods.
  • Afeitamos is the same in both present simple and past simple, so be sure to get or give enough context to figure out the verb tense

Nosotros nos afeitamos ayer.
We shaved yesterday.

Yo me afeité el lunes pasado.
I shaved last Monday.

¿Te afeitaste por la mañana?
Did you shave in the morning?

Afeitarse Conjugation

Past Imperfect

Yoafeitaba
Túafeitabas
Él, ella, ustedafeitaba
Nosotrosafeitábamos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesafeitaban

Ella se afeitaba las piernas en la mañana.
She used to shave her legs in the mornings.

Yo nunca me afeitaba.
I used to never shave.

Tú te afeitabas a diario de joven.
You used to shave everyday when you were young.

Conditional

Yoafeitaría
Túafeitarías
Él, ella, ustedafeitaría
Nosotrosafeitaríamos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesafeitarían

Me afeitaría si pudiera.
I would shave if I could.

Si Juan hubiera llegado a tiempo, se afeitaría antes de venir.
If Juan had arrived on time, he would have shaved before coming.

No sabía que nos afeitaríamos hoy.
I didn’t know we would shave today.

Future Simple

Yoafeitaré
Túafeitarás
Él, ella, ustedafeitará
Nosotrosafeitaremos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesafeitarán

Me afeitaré el viernes, antes de la fiesta.
I will shave on Friday, before the party.

Ellos se afeitarán después de la escuela.
They will shave after school.

Tú te afeitarás antes de ir al trabajo.
You will shave before going to work.

Afeitarse Conjugation: Subjunctive Mood

We use the subjunctive mood to talk about hypotheses, hopes, wishes, or uncertainty. The word que (that) normally is located a couple of words before the verb, if not immediately before the reflexive pronoun.

Present Subjunctive

Yoafeite
Túafeites
Él, ella, ustedafeite
Nosotrosafeitemos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesafeiten

Quiero que mi hijo se afeite.
I want my son to shave.

Hasta que te afeites, iremos a la reunión.
Once you shave, we’ll go to the gathering.

Past Subjunctive

Yoafeitara / afeitase
Túafeitaras / afeitases
Él, ella, ustedafeitara /afeitase
Nosotrosafeitáramos /afeitásemos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesafeitaran / afeitasen

Yo quería que nos afeitáramos antes del vuelo.
I wanted us to shave before the flight.

Si ellos se afeitasen, se verían mejor.
If they shaved, they would look better.

The afeitarse conjugation in past subjunctive tense can either end in -ara or –ase. Both ways are accepted although -ara is more common and informal. When writing a formal letter, I suggest you use the verb ending -ase. This also applies in the next tense with -era and -ese.

Past Perfect Subjunctive

Yohubiera / hubiese + afeitado
Túhubieras / hubieses + afeitado
Él, ella, ustedhubiera / hubiese + afeitado
Nosotroshubiéramos / hubiésemos + afeitado
Ellos, ellas, ustedeshubieran / hubiesen + afeitado

For the past perfect subjunctive tense, we use the auxiliary verb haber and the past participle of afeitar.

Si yo me hubiera afeitado ayer, hoy no me vería tan desaliñado.
If I had shaved yesterday,I wouldn’t look so scruffy today.

Se hubieran afeitado por la mañana, ahorita ya no tiene sentido.
You should have shaved in the morning, there is no point now.

Si nosotros nos hubiésemos afeitado en la tarde, ya no tendríamos que hacerlo ahora.
If we had shaved in the afternoon, we wouldn’t have to do it now.

Present Perfect Subjunctive

Yohaya + afeitado
Túhayas + afeitado
Él, ella, ustedhaya + afeitado
Nosotroshayamos + afeitado
Ellos, ellas, ustedeshayan + afeitado

For the perfect subjunctive tense we use the auxiliary verb haber and the past participle of afeitar.

Da igual que ellos se hayan afeitado.
It doesn’t matter if they shaved.

Es lo mismo que te hayas afeitado ayer u hoy.
It is the same whether you shaved yesterday or today.

Another subjunctive tense exists: future. Since it is rarely used, I am not including it in this lesson.

Afeitarse Conjugation: Imperative Mood

The imperative mood is used to give commands. These tenses don’t include most of the subject pronouns since you can’t give commands in the first person singular (yo) or plural (nosotros) or the third person (él, ella, ellos, ellas).

The imperative mood emphasizes the verb, as the sentence normally starts with it unless it is a negative form. In these cases, the reflexive pronoun sometimes adds to the verb at the end:

Afeitémonos instead of nos afeitemos—as in the present subjunctive. It is possible to keep the reflexive pronoun detached at the beginning but you need to give it imperative voice with exclamation marks: te afeitas versus ¡te afeitas!

AffirmativeNegative
Aféitate / ¡Te afeitas!No te afeites
Aféitese / ¡Se afeita!No se afeite
Afeitémonos / ¡Nos afeitamos!No nos afeitemos
Aféitense / ¡Se afeitan!No se afeiten

No te afeites afuera de la regadera.
Don’t shave outside the shower.

Afeitémonos ahora mismo.
Let’s shave right now.

¡Aféitate en otro lado!
Shave somewhere else!

Let’s practice what we have covered so far!
