Entender Conjugation: Free Spanish Lesson and PDF

Are you ready to understand the entender conjugation?

This Spanish verb means “to understand.” Its other English translations include “to see,” “to follow,” and “to get.”  

Entender conjugation is stem-changing. In many of the forms, the e changes to ie. For example:

Tú me entiendes.
You get me.

Today, you’ll learn the entender conjugation in three moods:

  • indicative mood
  • subjunctive mood
  • imperative mood

Entender Conjugation: Indicative Mood

Present Simple

Yoentiendo
Túentiendes
Él, ella, ustedentiende
Nosotrosentendemos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesentienden

Note that the only non-stem changer in this entender conjugation set is for nosotros.

¿Entiendes lo que te digo?
Do you understand what I’m saying?

Él no entiende el problema.
He doesn’t understand the problem.

Nos entendemos muy bien.
We understand each other very well.

Past Simple 

Yoentendí
Túentendiste
Él, ella, ustedentendió
Nosotrosentendimos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesentendieron

No entendí la tarea.
I didn’t understand the homework.

Karla entendió la pregunta del examen.
Karla understood the question on the exam.

Perdón, no entendimos qué debemos hacer.
Sorry, we didn’t understand what to do.

Past Imperfect 

Yoentendía
Túentendías
Él, ella, ustedentendía
Nosotrosentendíamos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesentendían

Cuando era pequeño no entendía cómo los magos hacían magia. Ahora entiendo que hacen trucos. 
When I was little I didn’t understand how magicians did magic. Now I understand that they do tricks.

¿Recuerdas cuando te despertaste de la cirugía? Estabas confundida y no entendías nada.
Do you remember when you woke up from surgery? You were confused and didn’t understand anything.

Hace unas semanas no entendíamos estos temas en matemáticas, pero hora ya lo hacemos.
A few weeks ago we didn’t understand these topics in math, but now we do.

Ellos no entendían lo que pasaba. 
They didn’t understand what was happening.

Conditional

Yoentendería
Túentenderías
Él, ella, ustedentendería
Nosotrosentenderíamos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesentenderían

No puedo contarte, no creo que entenderías la situación.
I can’t tell you, I don’t think you would understand the situation.

Estoy segura de que si le explicas por qué te enojaste, él lo entendería. 
I’m sure if you explained why you got angry, he would understand.

Entenderíamos mejor si nos explicaras paso a paso el procedimiento.
We would understand better if you explained the procedure step by step.

Future simple

Yoentenderé
Túentenderás
Él, ella, ustedentenderá
Nosotrosentenderemos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesentenderán

Me pregunto si algún día entenderé ese libro.
I wonder if one day I will understand that book.

Ella entenderá tu razón.
She’ll understand your reason.

Jamás entenderemos cómo hiciste ese truco de magia.
We will never understand how you did that magic trick.

Entender Conjugation: Subjunctive Mood

Present Subjunctive

Yoentienda
Túentiendas
Él, ella, ustedentienda
Nosotrosentendamos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesentiendan

Ojalá entienda la explicación de hoy.
Hopefully I’ll understand today’s explanation.

No creo que entiendas la película; está en francés.   
I don’t think you’ll understand the movie; it’s in French.

Nos quedaremos aquí hasta que entendamos lo que está pasando.
We will stay here until we understand what is going on.

Escribí la carta con mi mejor letra para que entiendan lo que dice.
I wrote the letter in my best handwriting so that they understand what it says.

Past Subjunctive

Yoentendiera
Túentendieras
Él, ella, ustedentendiera
Nosotrosentendiéramos
Ellos, ellas, ustedesentendieran

Si entendieras cuánto te amo, serías más feliz.
If you understood how much I love you, you would be happier.

Me gustaría que entendiéramos todos los idiomas del mundo.  
I would like us to understand all the languages of the world.

Ojalá entendieran lo importante que esto es para mí.
I wish they understood how important this is to me.

There are other four subjunctive tenses for entender conjugation: present perfect, past perfect, future, and future perfect. However, the future and the future perfect are rarely used (almost never); and the present and past subjunctive tenses in the tables above are the most common ones.  

Entender Conjugation: Imperative Mood

Always use the imperative mood to give orders or commands.

Entiende que es hora de irnos.
Understand that it’s time to go.

Let him understand his mistakes!

Es hora de que entendamos qué fue lo que ocurrió aquel día. 
It is time for us to understand what happened that day.

3. ¿Te acuerdas cuando no ________ español? (tú, past imperfect)
