Why Learning Spanish Is Your Child’s Key to a Better Future

Who doesn’t look for a better future for their child? We’re all guilty of imagining our children as important public figures, successful scientists, doctors, models, actors, and presidents.

And we all know that the choice is finally theirs—not ours.

But you still set them up for success by providing all the tools your children need to have a better future, and learning Spanish is an essential ingredient of a promising tomorrow.

Let me tell you why.

The science is clear—learning another language will have a direct positive impact on your child’s academic achievement. Compared to those without an additional language, bilingual children have improved reading, writing, and math skills, and they generally score higher on standardized tests. Why Is It Important for Kids To Learn Spanish?

If you’re living in the U.S., you need to learn Spanish.

Bold statement, right?

But the fact is, being bilingual opens doors for your child. And by starting their studies earlier, it’s easier for them to become fluent faster.

Here are all the reasons why your child should be learning Spanish if you live in the United States.

1. It Connects Your Child With the Community

If your children speak Spanish in the US, they will be able to communicate with 41 million native Spanish-speaking inhabitants. According to CNN, the U.S. is the second-largest Spanish-speaking country in the world.

If your child speaks Spanish, they can have more friends and communicate better with those around them. In addition, by having your kid learn Spanish, they will be ready for new encounters with people worldwide.

2. It Connects Your Children with Their Origin and Their Ancestors’ Culture

Is anyone within your extended family a native Spanish speaker? Then by teaching Spanish to your kids, you’re giving them a deeper sense of belonging.

Whether you’re the first or second generation of immigrants, your children will be healthier if they understand where they come from and can speak the language.

Remember their excitement while watching Coco or Encanto? They finally felt that their culture was cool.

It’s important your child is proud of their roots, and knowing Spanish is essential to achieve it.

3. It Provides More Professional Opportunities to Your Child

It’s no secret that the more languages you know, the easier it is to find a job.

And in the U.S., learning Spanish is a real game-changer.

With a community of 41 million native speakers, many jobs look for professionals that speak English and Spanish.

All you need to do is look at the Indeed listing of bilingual jobs to see how many doors your kids will open if they speak Spanish. Glassdoor also has many job offers for people who know Spanish.

According to a study conducted by The Economist, a person can earn anywhere from $50,000 to $125,000 more just by knowing a foreign language.

Also, it has been scientifically proven that bilingual students enjoy greater professional success than their monolingual peers (Tadmor et al., 2012).

4. It Gives Your Child a Strong Foundation for Their Future Studies

Spanish is an important subject in the U.S. educational system, and most students start their first lessons still in elementary school. In high school, Spanish is available as an SAT II subject test and as an Advanced Placement (AP) test.

You can’t imagine how many kids struggle with these exams.

Why?

Because even if they come from Hispanic communities and speak Spanish at home, they have never studied it. They’re not used to using this language inside the school context. They struggle with literary concepts, writing conventions, and formal language.

Learning Spanish from an early age will enhance their skills and teach them how to use Spanish as a tool. Additionally, it helps them in other subjects, especially those requiring inventiveness and creativity. For example, Lee and Kim (2011) proved that students with a higher degree of bilingualism perform better on creative thinking tasks.

5. It Opens Your Child To the World (Through Global Awareness and Understanding of Diversity)

In the school where I currently teach, we have students from 28 different countries.

They are all fully bilingual, and most of them are fluent in four or more languages.

Additionally, we haven’t had a single incident that would involve discrimination or racism. Why? Because by studying other languages and cultures, you open yourself to those cultures.

Through this, the fear of the unknown—which people argue is the reason behind discrimination and prejudice—is automatically removed. Crosbie (2014) suggested that people who learn a second language in a bicultural context possess a strong sense of social justice due to their increased sensitivity and empathy for cultural diversity.

How Can You Teach Your Child Spanish?

The benefits of learning Spanish are clear and you’re ready for the next step. But how do you start helping your child to learn Spanish?

Even if you speak the language yourself, transmitting this knowledge to your child can be daunting.

If you’re homeschooling, check out this piece on how to include Spanish in your homeschooling routine. But even for parents of homeschooled children, delegating Spanish classes to professionals is often the best option.
